In gardens along the hedge they often like to plant a liana - kampsis. Its main advantage is the abundant flowering with the dissolution of bright gramophone buds. Consider the rules of planting and caring for a plant so that the garden is filled with bright colors.

Introduction to Campsys

Campsis is a deciduous tree liana belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. The flower owes its name to the Greek word, which in translation means “bend”, “twist”, “bend”.This plant is a melliferous plant, very fond of heat, and during flowering it pleases with bright buds.

At the expense of excellent frost resistance in the middle lane, including in the Moscow region, campsis got accustomed without problems. Moreover, gardeners loved him for his decorative, trouble-free cultivation and ease of care.

Often kampsis is confused with the metering station or tekoma. But these are different plants, despite the fact that they belong to the same family.

The foliage of vines is not pinnate, each leaf is folded and includes 7-11 small leaves, a characteristic feature of which is the serrate edge. In July, the plant begins flowering and continues until September with the blooming of large buds( 9 * 5 cm) of tubular form. They are collected in long panicles and are located at the ends of the shoots. The color of the buds is varied: pink, orange, red, crimson, etc.

At the end of flowering, the fruit develops - a double-leaf pod filled with seeds with “wings”.

Planting kampsis in open ground

Campsis is a frost-resistant plant and calmly tolerates insignificant short-term frosts at - 20ºC.Due to this, in areas of the middle band in open ground it can be planted in the second half of May. When choosing a landing site in the Moscow region, give preference to the southern and southeast sides of the garden.

Ensure that the place is reliably protected from drafts and winds, and also located at a distance from the house so that insects attracted by flowers do not fly into it.

The plant is completely indifferent to the soil and can develop well in limestone soil. The only requirement is that the soil must be rich in minerals and trace elements.

It is preferable to plant already rooted cuttings, and cut off from a well-developed and abundantly flowering plants. This will allow you to get the first buds for 2-3 years after planting.

Planted kampsis in the hole 40 * 50 * 50 cm, previously dug out and prepared in the fall. The top soil from the pit is set aside separately, half a kilogram of mineral fertilizer is added to it, 5 kg of compost are mixed thoroughly. Next, the resulting nutrient substrate is spread on the bottom of the hole, set the seedling on top and sprinkle it with fertile soil.

When planting, make sure that the cutting is located at such a depth at which it rooted and grew before.

Planted seedling watered at the trunk, lightly crush the ground, and then, when the water is completely absorbed and the top layer of the earth dries out slightly, mulch is performed using peat or compost.

Be sure to establish a support on which the vine can grow and hold.

Rules of care

You can say that Kampsis resembles a weed. And all thanks to the rapid growth and vitality. However, in order to get an abundant and long flowering, you must carefully follow the rules of planting and caring for Campsis in the Moscow Region and other regions of Russia:

  1. Lighting. For proper development, budding and enhanced growth, Kampsis needs good coverage. Therefore, for planting pick open areas. You should not be afraid - the sun's rays will not burn the foliage even with strong heat.
  2. Temperature. Naturally, since the plant is thermophilic, then the temperature of the content should be quite high, as in the southern regions. In areas of northern latitudes, development activity is much lower. In addition, you need to protect the plant from drafts, and shelter for the winter.
  3. Watering. In the period of extreme heat, as well as when the buds are blooming, the plant needs abundant watering. Nevertheless, a slight drought does not hurt him. But he does not like “wet feet”, so avoid stagnant water in the soil.
  4. Feeding. If the plant is planted in a fertile substrate, fertilizing is not required. If the useful and nutritional components are not enough, you should add fertilizer in the form of nitrogen-phosphorus complexes.
  5. Wintering. Campsis needs to be prepared for winter - its roots are covered with fallen leaves, spruce branches, sawdust. It is advisable to remove the vine from the supports, put on the ground and also cover. If this cannot be done, the vines are simply insulated by wrapping a plastic wrap directly on the support. But in Belarus, care for Kampsis does not provide shelter for the winter.
  6. Trimming. Throughout the year, the vine should be cut. First, pruning is done in spring in order to remove frozen and old branches and to stimulate the growth of new ones. Re-pruning is carried out in the fall, to shorten and shape the overgrown vine.

Reproduction of the campsis

Reproduction is carried out in several ways.

Seeds

This method has drawbacks, therefore it is used extremely rarely. The seedlings obtained as a result of sowing of seeds do not inherit the varietal qualities from their parents; they begin to bloom much later than the specimens obtained by the vegetative method.

If you decide to propagate the plant with this option, the seeds should be pre-stratified and stored at room temperature.

With the arrival of spring, the seeds are sown in neutral permeable and loose soil, deepening about 0.5 cm, covered with foil and put in a warm place( ideal temperature 25 ºC).In a month, shoots will spawn and, when a third pair of leaflets appear on them, the young can be transplanted for permanent residence.

Reproduction of kampsis with cuttings

In June-July green cuttings are cut from young shoots, 2-3 leaves are left on top, and the rest are removed. The remaining leaves are cut to one third, and the cuttings are planted into the ground at an angle of 45 degrees in penumbra in loose soil, and then they are watered and mulched.

Lignified cuttings of

They are harvested in the spring, pruning cuttings with 4 or more buds from woody shoots of annual age, and immediately planted in the soil at an angle.

Root shoots

With proper care and ideal maintenance conditions, the vine produces many basal processes. They are dug up with a fragment of the root system, and immediately transplanted to a permanent place of residence. The procedure is carried out after the fall of the foliage or in early spring, when there is no plant growth yet.

layouts With the arrival of spring, the shoots are lowest to the ground and fixed with braces. Throughout the season, you should follow some rules: the ground should be constantly loose and wet. As early as next spring, the rooted and grown plant can be detached from the parent and transplanted into its own well.

Diseases and pests

Gardeners love Kampsis and for the fact that diseases and pests are practically unaffected. The only thing that can affect the plant is root rot with a strong gulf and stagnant water in the soil. True, the problem is solved pretty quickly - due to the speed of development of the shoots. So all you have to do is fix the watering and remove the damaged parts of the rhizome and the stems.

Pests also do not affect Kampsis. The most daring - aphid, which periodically settles on the leaves and buds of the plant. Ants immediately appear after the aphids. Eliminate annoying insects can be treatment with insecticides. You should also carry out preventive spraying with the arrival of summer.

If an adult plant more than 2–3 years old does not bloom, the cause should be sought in a poor substrate, in a cold winter or in an invasion of pests.

Landscape Ideas

Liana grows very quickly, instantly fills the support provided. Therefore, it is often planted near arbors, hedges, arches. You can also decorate it with the walls of outbuildings. In this case, it is necessary to regularly inspect the walls of the building and not allow Kampsis to get close to the roof. With its suction cups, it is firmly fixed and can even destroy the roof.

Kampsis buds have been used in various flower arrangements. In addition, they are long in the vase.

Properly planted kampsis, a well-designed and developed support will help grow a graceful and beautiful living wall with many flowers and a bright aroma.
