Characteristic features of the

group A distinctive feature of clematis is the ability to form buds on both last year's growth and young lashes, while in most species this separation does not affect the quality of flowering, but it does require a special approach to the formation of a bush. This is especially important for varieties that have two flowering periods: they tend to first appear on the buds of last year’s branches, and then, with a short break, on a young growth. Some hybrids of such a distinction in time do not have and bloom continuously, smoothly moving from old branches to annuals, while others are distinguished by longer and more abundant blooms in the second run.

In order to maintain the neat appearance of the plant and the size of the flowers, it is necessary to carry out light pruning every year and regularly. It is done twice per season:

  • in the summer, after the first wave of flowering, cut off the flowering part of last year’s branches or cut them out completely if the bush is too thick;
  • in the fall, after the second wave of flowering, ¼ faded young lashes are shortened by, leaving no more than 1.5 m.

It goes without saying that all diseased, twisted and growing into the bush branches are subject to complete removal.

To date, there is a huge variety of clematis varieties of the second group and sometimes it is very difficult to make a choice in favor of one type or another: one hybrid amazes with its size, the second “takes” terry buds, and the third with an amazing color. We have tried to collect for you the most beautiful varieties of clematis, which deserve recognition and love not only from gardeners, but also in the "professional field", and we hasten to introduce them to them. So, let's begin.

Terry varieties of

What could be more beautiful than a huge bud filled with many petals, rounded or with sharp tips, straight or wavy, delicate or saturated colors? Among the terry clematis there are both early-flowering and late varieties. An interesting feature of this group is that some species retain the terry shape of flowers throughout the flowering period, both on old and new shoots, while others have full inflorescences that bloom only on last year's growth, and the young lashes will delight with a maximum of semi-double, and evensimple flowers. Admire the photo and read the description of terry and semi-double varieties of clematis of the second group of pruning.

Clematis Red Star

One of the bright terry hybrids with large raspberry-red inflorescences, although semi-double varieties of the plant may occur. Petals slightly wavy, pointed. The maximum height of the shrub is 2 m, it does not grow very quickly, the whips are well attached to the support and crawl along it.

The variety is early flowering, and it blooms in two waves in the last year and current growth alternately:

  • from mid-May to June;
  • from August to September.

Clematis Red Star is still a novice among gardeners, but every year it gets more and more fans thanks to its gorgeous flowering and good frost resistance.

Clematis Innocent Blush

The bush has rather modest dimensions( the vine grows no more than 2 m in height), but the variety is famous for its flowers. They are very large, up to 18 cm in diameter, have a rare color among clematis: light pink petals on the edge and in the middle are painted in a darker, pearl-pink color. Clematis is characterized by the presence of two forms of inflorescences at once:

  • at last year's growth blooms the largest double flowers, while their petals become smaller and smaller as they approach the center than the peony resembles;
  • smaller and simple buds of six slightly wavy petals bloom on young branches.

Clematis blooms early in May, and repeats bloom again in the fall, but not so abundant.

The shrub is subject to weak pruning with shortening of shoots in spring to 75 cm. It winters well, but freezes in especially frosty winters without shelter.

Clematis Innocent Glance

Another large-flowered, early flowering variety with small vines and good winter hardiness. Just as with the variety Innocent Blush, the height of the bush is about 2 m, in May, on the old branches, large terry inflorescences bloom on it, and in July, on a young growth, it is already simple or semi-double buds. Perhaps this is where the similarity of varieties ends:

  • , in contrast to the light color of Blash, Glans has a more saturated color, although it remains within the pink tones with a darker border along the edge of the petals;
  • the petals themselves have an ellipse shape with a sharp tip, while Blash has them rounded.

Clematis Blue Exploration

One of the new Polish varieties( also known as the Blue Blast), obtained in 2011, is distinguished by large inflorescences of a rich blue color, while the tips of the petals are pink. Early in the month of May, dense flowers are blooming on old branches, in summer on young shoots they are already simple buds.

The shrub needs support and can rise up to 3 m in height. It hibernates well, subject to weak pruning.

Clematis Blue Light

Not less impressive is the variety of blue Clematis, however, grows slightly less Exploded( up to 2 m in height), besides, the terry of its petals, in contrast to the named variety, remains throughout the entire flowering period. And the liana blooms early, with two visits( from May to June and from August to October), both on young and old branches, therefore pruning should be done lightly. The buds themselves are large, up to 15 cm in diameter, with pointed narrow petals.

Clematis Piilu

The Estonian hybrid from the Vititsella group attracts attention with its large size and delicate color of flowers: they are pink-purple, with a dark, almost crimson, strip along the petal, and yellow fuzzy-stamens come out from the center of the bud.

Clematis blossoms in two periods, almost without a break:

  • in May are the first to reveal full buds on last year’s branches;
  • at the end of July simple but large flowers also bloom on a young growth.

The description of clematis to Piil would not be complete if not to mention the size of the vine itself: its maximum height is 1.5 m, due to which the plant is often grown on pots in balconies.

Clematis Veronica Choice

Shrub vine up to 3 m in height, in early summer on old branches reveals large double flowers in the form of pompons of delicate, purple-white, coloring. But in August already simple flowers bloom on the young growth, while retaining the original color. The variety is resistant to low temperatures, has quite compact dimensions - the height of the bush does not exceed 2.5 m, it is well woven around the support.

Clematis Kiri Te Kanawa

One of those varieties that preserve the flower buds throughout the flowering. The inflorescences are rather large, consisting of a set of dark blue petals with a slightly pointed and wavy edge, in the center one can clearly see contrasting yellow stamens.

Continuous flowering of clematis lasts for a month and passes in two waves:

  • May( last year’s branches);
  • August( young shoots).

The variety is valued for the ability to use beautiful buds for cutting and for high winter hardiness.

Clematis Andromeda

A sufficiently high liana can stretch up to 3 m, weaves well on a support, the average growth rates. Differs in two-color coloring of inflorescences and two waves of flowering:

  • in May on old branches half-double, large( up to 16 cm in diameter) white inflorescences with a wide bright crimson stripe along the petals and yellow stamens bloom;
  • in September on a young growth simple flowers bloom with the same color.

Planting clematis is better in partial shade - in the sun, delicate buds quickly wither, and the flowering time is reduced.

Clematis Kaiser

One of the smallest clematis grows to a maximum of 1.5 m in height."Takes" not in size, but in bloom: rather large inflorescences( 14 cm in diameter) almost completely cover the vine, hiding the foliage under it. Terry flowers are painted in a bright pink-purple color, have an interesting structure:

  • The extreme row consists of large, wide petals, rounded at the tips;
  • inner petals are narrow, while the closer to the middle, the narrower, down to the needle.

Kaiser blooms early, in May, but not for long, just two months, and in the cold spring the middle of the flower turns green.

Clematis Asao

Liana up to 3 m high is simply created for vertical gardening, especially semi-shady places near the wall of the house, a fence, and also for arbors, the only thing that it grows moderately. However, it is not so important, because clematis blooms on both young and old branches.

The Asao bloom passes in two waves:

  • first in May bloom( up to 20 cm) semi-double flowers of last year's growth;
  • at the end of July - at the beginning of August, smaller and already simple inflorescences appear on the current growth.

The color of the flowers is very delicate: white stripes with a pinkish net go in the center of the wide pink petals, and the yellow stamens complement the spectacular palette of colors.

Clematis Mazuri

A small, maximum 3 m in height, bush will surprise you with very large terry inflorescences, painted in blue, with subtle greenish spots around the outer circumference of the petals. The variety is relatively new and late flowering: buds with a diameter of up to 20 cm bloom only in June, but adorn the plant until September. It is interesting that at first the petals are tightly collected, so that the flower looks like an elaborate hand-made origami, but by the time the inflorescences bloom and wilt, the petals open and the flower itself appears as if it is loose.

The grade possesses high frost resistance.

Clematis Mai Darling

Novelty Polish breeders will appreciate the large terry inflorescences up to 23 cm in diameter. The maximum doubleness is visible at the first flowering, which occurs late, in June, the second wave at the end of summer is already semi-double. But the bright color of the buds is maintained throughout the flowering: they are purple-red, with a pink stripe along the petal and an uneven lighter edge. The shape of the buds resembles the variety Innocent Blash - to the center of the flower the petals become gradually shorter and smaller.

Bush has a fairly modest size, from 1.5 to 2 m, which allows you to grow it in tubs and containers.

Species of creepers with a simple structure of inflorescences

The clematis varieties of the second group of pruning, the description and photos of which are presented below, do not have as many petals as terry clematis. Most hybrids have 6 or 8 of them, but they are very large and wide, so simple clematis is no less effective, for example, as these varieties.

Clematis Mrs Chelmondeli

The variety has a long and abundant flowering. In addition, its inflorescences are simply very large, with a diameter of up to 25 cm, painted in a bright blue color with a slight impurity of mauve. Liana itself grows up to 3 m in height.

Inflorescence shape and flowering time depends on the type of pruning. In general, the variety belongs to the second group of pruning and can form buds on both the last year and the current increment. If the vine is cut mildly, then on the old branches, in May, semi-double buds will open, and flowering will end in August. With a strong pruning, the flowers will be simple, but large, and flowering will come only in July and last until September.

Clematis Little Mermaid

Japanese hybrid with a unique and rather rare color: large, about 12 cm in diameter, the inflorescences consist of 8 broad petals of salmon color( pure, without spots and stripes) with a velvet surface. Yellow fluffy anthers look very beautiful against their background. As the flowers bloom, they gradually fade and turn into a pale pink. The flowers have almost regular round shape, and they bloom in May on old lashes. A repeated wave of flowering on a young growth occurs at the end of summer. On the shoots of last year, the petals of the buds may be more, so that they become semi-double.

The variety can still be found under the name "Little Mermaid".

The bush is rather compact, its height does not exceed 2 m. It winters well, but when grown in the middle lane it is better to cover the vine.

The second name of the variety, or rather, its translation - Sunset.

Clematis blooms early, in May, and continues until autumn arrives. Buds bloom on both old and young branches, while not changing the color and shape of the flower.

Clematis Koroleva Jadviga

The bush grows up to a maximum of 2.5 m in height, clings well to the support with petioles on the leaves. Against the background of dark green foliage, large white inflorescences up to 16 cm in diameter look beautifully contrasting to the spot. From the description and on the photo of Clematis Queen Jadwig it is clear that they are flat, with round wide petals in one row, the edges are slightly wavy and clearly pronounced rib. The stamens themselves are white, and the tops are purple. In late May, the buds bloom on old shoots, and in August on young ones, so pruning is needed weak.

If the spring is cold, light green stripes appear along the middle of the petals.

Clematis President of

A completely compact variety from the Patents group, grows to a maximum of 2.5 m, a decent growth rate is up to 10 cm per night. Resistant to low temperatures and diseases. It is characterized by abundant flowering on old and young lashes in two waves:

  • from late May to late June;
  • from July to September.

Inflorescences large( 17 cm), painted in a saturated, blue-violet, color. Petals are wide, tapering at the tips, in the center there is a darker or lighter strip, depending on the basic shade of the flower. The stamens are also dark, red, but the threads are pinkish.

The variety received its name in honor of the President of the Gardening Association of Britain, and was bred in the early 19th century.

Clematis Westerplatte

Chic variety, noble color of inflorescences: they are dark red, with velvety, wide and rounded, petals in one row and the same color stamens. Depending on the growing climate, a brighter strip may appear in the center.

Blooms early, in June, on last year’s branches, after a short break, turning to young growth, and pleases with its appearance until the end of August. The bush itself is compact, no more than 2 m in height.

Clematis Tudor

Absolutely unpretentious variety, grows equally well and blooms both in the sun and in partial shade. The bush grows up to a maximum of 2 m in height, it lugs well on a support. It blooms from May to the end of summer with two visits, first on the old ones, then on the young whips. The inflorescences fascinate with their simplicity and bright colors: 6 large wide petals with corrugated twisting edges and blunt tips are painted in lilac color, but along the petal there is a bright crimson strip. The diameter of each flower is about 12 cm, while the shape and size of the inflorescences are maintained throughout the flowering.

Clematis Solidarity

Very compact “baby clematis” from Polish breeders with a height of only 1.5 m will please with large bright red inflorescences up to 16 cm in diameter. Their petals are velvety, with a barely visible stripe in the middle, only a couple shades lighter than the main tone.

Solidarity begins to bloom early, already in May on the overwintered branches, but it blooms until September continuously, switching to a young growth.

The variety can be planted both in the sun and in partial shade.

As you have already seen, the second group of clematis can surprise even the most demanding gardeners. Well, let it be necessary to work a little around climbing liana, but the result is worth it. Choose your favorite varieties and turn your yard into a flower garden. Good luck!
