Almost all over the earth you can find plants from this mysterious family. They come in the form of shrubs, trees, vines, and only occasionally grasses. The main feature of the Mulberry family is the ability to excrete a liquid that is very similar to milk. These include more than 1,500 species that prefer a relatively warm climate. The fruits of some of them are eaten, others take valuable raw materials for production and wood. Some options are used as a decoration in landscape design.

The most well-known representatives of mulberry trees are mulberry, fig, bread and rubber tree. Each of them has its own characteristics and value. Therefore, people try to plant such trees on their plots.

Acquaintance with the mysterious plant

Some gardener lovers ask themselves: what is the mulberry tree, since they rarely encounter such a name. But when they find out that this is the most common mulberry, they are incredibly happy. After all, there is practically no person on earth who would refuse to taste juicy berries in the summer heat. In some localities, the plant is specially planted near the yard, so that passersby will not pass by attractive fruits.

Mulberry tree is often elevated to the royal grandeur, because he was appreciated by the famous monarchs. This is evidenced by trees that are over 100 years old, growing in the botanical gardens of Europe. Historians say that during the reign of Peter I a decree was issued forbidding the cutting of mulberry. That is why mulberry is widespread in the middle lane and southern regions of Russia.

Mulberry is a deciduous plant, towering above the ground a maximum of 15 meters. Its wide compact crown consists of a set of thin twigs on which toothed leaves are located.

Each spring, the mulberry puts on its original floral outfit. It consists of male and female buds, collected in an elegant earring, which sways gracefully between the leaves. After successful pollination, instead of inflorescences on the branches, juicy berries develop, known for their valuable properties all over the world.

The fruit of a mulberry tree looks like a blackberry, but has an oblong shape. Some berries can grow up to 4 cm in length. Depending on the cultivar, the fruits have the following color:

  • black;
  • red;
  • pink;
  • white;
  • purple.

In addition, they have a specific smell and a pleasant aftertaste, which is long preserved in the mouth. The only drawback - the berries are not transportable and lose their properties during long storage.

Most often, mulberry brings a lot of fruit. In some cases, approximately 350 kg of berries were harvested from a single tree. Therefore, it is advisable to collect them in time, otherwise the berries fall to the ground and disappear.

In the natural environment, you can find mulberry with inedible fruits that are valued for wood. A plant with small berries, attributed to a number of forage varieties. To date, breeders have brought a lot of cultivated varieties of heat-loving wood. Especially popular are the white and black versions:

  1. "Black Baroness".Fruits appear in June or July, depending on the climatic zone of growth. Usually they are large. Have a delicate aroma and a pronounced sweetness. The tree is able to withstand frosts up to 25 degrees, if they last several days.
  2. "Shelly 150".Variety bred on the territory of Ukraine. It is a mulberry tree with large leaves. Some of them grow to 0.5 meters. Sweet berries, the size of 5.5 cm, have a special taste and useful properties.
  3. "White tenderness."The fruits of this variety ripen in early June. They have snow-white coloring and sweet juicy taste. In wet weather they are saturated with moisture, gaining a watery character. Ornamental tree variants grow no higher than 5 meters and are distinguished by falling branches. It is white mulberry used for feeding silkworms to get natural silk.
  4. "Black Mulberry".Variety is one of the main species. Its original place of growth is Iran and Afghanistan. The tree can reach a height of about 15 meters. Differs sprawling crown. Maintains short frosts not lower than 10 degrees.
  5. "Red Mulberry".The tree came to the territory of Europe from North America. It can reach 20 m in height, forming a wide crown. Often from the side of the plant resembles a huge tent. It is characterized by large leaves with sharp tips. Sweet and sour fruits ripen by the last decade of June.

Decorative tree species are used to decorate park areas. They are planted most often on the territory of country houses in order to regularly eat the delicious fruits of a mysterious plant. But how to successfully grow a mulberry tree and enjoy a bountiful harvest every year? There are some simple rules.

Landmarks for amateur gardeners

Since mulberry trees are long-livers, first of all, you should think about a suitable part of the garden. An adult plant can reach a height of 4 meters, so it needs to constantly have access to light, air and moisture. Ideal - plant mulberry as a lonely tree.

Mulberry can grow on both saline and sandy soil. For this reason, the emphasis is on choosing the right landing site.

Under home use conditions, male and female trees can be planted at a maximum distance of approximately 3.5 m. They begin to prepare a pit for planting in late autumn. Its optimal dimensions: 50 cm width and the same depth. If necessary, before planting the pit can be increased by adjusting the seedling to the root.

The excavated earth is mixed with mineral fertilizer and humus. In the hole carefully set the seedling, straighten the roots, and then fall asleep prepared substrate. From above, the ground is watered and mulched. To do this, use straw, dry grass, leaves or humus.

When planting shrub mulberry trees, it is advisable to keep at least 0.5 m distance between seedlings.

Young mulberries need regular watering for the first 5 years. It is usually carried out until the middle of summer. During a drought, the mulberry tree especially needs moisture, so it should be watered more often. This will protect the berries from drying out. Watering is stopped at the end of July so that the tree can fully mature. Otherwise, the young shoots will simply freeze when the temperature drops sharply.

Bark is used as a means to combat worms. Of course, the most useful are fresh berries, which thoroughly cleanse the intestines, and fill the body with a full complex of precious elements.


Useful properties of mulberry are not only in its original berries. Musical instruments are made from dense mulberry wood. It is suitable for creating various handmade souvenirs. From it make barrels, which are used in the household. And the Chinese used mulberry wood in the paper industry.
