How to bend drywall dry and wet so as not to damage it

Drywall is often used to create arches, semicircular walls in a house or other structures. It is quite plastic and easily bends if it has a small thickness. However, in each case, you must follow the instructions so as not to break the sheet, so be sure to choose drywall of the desired thickness for a certain radius.

Several Ways to Bend Drywall

In order to bend the sheet, there are two options: dry and wet. For dry sheets of 9, 5 and 12, 5 mm are useful. In the first case, the bending radius will be half a meter, with a large thickness twice as much.

Dry way

1. If the arch is mounted, then the frame from metal profiles is first assembled. After this, the sheet is applied to the base of the arch, and gradually bending it, fix it with screws. The sheet must be mounted carefully, otherwise you can break it. Be sure to bend along the length of the sheet, not the width, otherwise the sheet will break.
2. When bending the sheet along a small radius, we make cuts parallel to each other at a distance of 1-5 cm. The radius of the bend depends on the size of the incisions. The smaller the gap, the smaller the radius of the form. An incision is made not through and through, you need to retreat 2 mm to the wrong side. Installation of the structure is carried out with cuts upwards, on the arch they are inside, on the column - outside. Due to them, the sheet is bent.

After the sheets are mounted, the cuts must be puttied.

Wet way

We use a perforated roller or an awl to apply slots, as in the dry method. It is necessary to pierce a sheet only on paper, not through and through. To make the sheet better wetted, take a non-waterproof drywall.

We apply water with a roller or brush, evenly wetting the surface, but so that the wrong layer is not wet. We apply water as much as the cardboard absorbs, more than not necessary. The sheet should be soaked, so leave it for 10 minutes, and then mount it to the surface. Putty cuts need the next day after drying the cardboard.

Both methods are quite simple, so not even a specialist will cope with them. The main thing in this matter is not to rush and do everything carefully according to the instructions.

There is also a special arched drywall on sale, but it uses fiberglass, which means it will be more difficult to cut. In addition, self-tapping screws enter it with difficulty. Of the minuses, one can also note the high cost of the material and its small thickness, which makes it necessary to use cardboard in two layers.

It is up to the buyer to decide which drywall to choose, but the usual one copes with the task no worse, but cheaper.
