Polystyrene ceiling tile: how to choose

Expanded polystyrene tiling may be the best solution if the ceiling is not whitened or painted. I want it, the tension structures do not fit into the budget, and the base ceiling cannot be called perfect smooth. A unique ceiling coating using tiles can be created quickly; this material is relatively inexpensive. There are a lot of options offered, so for any interior you can choose something suitable.

The appearance and basic characteristics of polystyrene tiles are determined by the method of its manufacture. Stamping or pressing can be identified by an implicit relief and fuzzy outlines of the picture. The thickness of such tiles is usually from five to eight millimeters. The surface of stamped products is loose, so dust and dirt are absorbed into it quite quickly. This is the main disadvantage of this type of tile. Of the advantages, low cost can be distinguished.

Refreshing stamped tiles is quite simple, since you can use acrylic compositions to paint it.

Using the hot extrusion method, tiles with a characteristic gloss and smooth surface are obtained. There are no obvious pores. Often this version of products imitates wood, marble or any other natural materials.

Caring for this type of tile is simple; it can be washed with plain water. Cost is also unlikely to hit the pocket. The pattern on the hot-extruded tile is more pronounced and deep.

If you want to create the effect of a seamless ceiling, you should pay attention to the injection tile made of polystyrene foam. This is a more expensive option, not amenable to further coloring. The edges of the products are perfectly even, so during installation there are no difficulties, joints are practically not visible.

For installation, you will also need to purchase glue and skirting boards. Of the tools you need a tape measure, pencil, building level, knife and stepladder. Sellers often recommend installing polystyrene tiles on the so-called "liquid nails". If they are used, it is impossible immediately after applying the composition to stick products to the ceiling. Mounting will be better if you wait a couple of minutes.

From the center of the room, work begins if the tile is placed horizontally. The starting point is the location of the chandelier, if it is already known. The tile is able to hide small defects in the base coat, however, it will not be able to mask a very bumpy surface. In addition, it will adhere poorly to the ceiling if large differences are present. They must be removed before installation.
