- 2.1 Plumbing thread
- 2.2 Anaerobic Sealant
The plumbing market contains many sealants for thread connections. They are divided into two large groups: new-generation sealants and sealing threads, as well as traditional tapes that were popular 50 years ago. The latter include FUM tapes, which, it would seem, should fade into the background, but remain popular with some masters.
Basically, Fum tape is used for quick repairs and not by professionals, because it is not suitable for long-term use. Competent plumbers use other gaskets and sealants for threaded connections.
Features and disadvantages
The first feature is that the reliability of the threaded connection will depend on the quality of the tape. The correct tape should stretch well and not tear, defective specimens are often torn into fibers, and after winding they are dubbed.
Another feature is the complexity of sealing compounds with tape. If previously it was not possible to work with similar material, then you will have to wind and unwind the thread several times.
Also, even an experienced master will not be able to immediately say how many tape-fum for winding will be needed for a specific threaded connection. Therefore, unpredictability of material consumption is a common thing.
The disadvantages include the fact that the tape is not intended for multidirectional loads: it does not withstand thermal linear expansion, and after narrowing of the pipelines. This may result in depressurization.
Also, the tape is not a universal material for sealing joints, since it cannot be wound on threads damaged or damaged by corrosion. This is fraught with rupture of the material and leaks.
Alternatives
There are two modern and better alternatives to using fum tape.
Plumbing thread
A plumbing thread is strong fibers impregnated with sealant. It is easier to wrap and more convenient to use. In addition, it has other advantages:
- The filament fibers do not lend themselves to drying out or swelling from the action of high temperatures and humidity, they do not undergo deformation;
- A plumbing thread is impregnated with a sufficient amount of sealant during production, so its insulating properties are maintained at a high level;
- For work with a thread special skills are not necessary;
- The thread withstands higher pressure in threaded connections compared to tape;
- Connections with plumbing threads are quickly disassembled if necessary.
Anaerobic Sealant
Securely fastens smooth and tapered threads. It penetrates into all the gaps of the compound and solidifies into a strong polymer composition. The sealant has not only an insulating, but also an anti-corrosion effect. They differ in the degree of strength for low, medium and high, which are used for different types of work.
