The role of the building’s business card is often played by the appearance of the facade windows, giving it personality and character. To achieve the effect, you need to correctly determine the finish of window openings and slopes.

What to choose materials for the design of windows on the facade

Developing the design of the building, it is necessary to think in advance the framing of windows on the facade of the house. When choosing a material, wall decoration, building style, and the color scheme of the surrounding landscape are taken into account.

For structures erected from wood, the decoration of facades, in particular window openings, also uses wooden decor elements - platbands and shutters. They can be simple or decorated with filigree carvings. For the manufacture of decoration elements, species such as oak, beech, and shaped wood are used.

Advantages of the wooden facade of the window:

  • attractiveness, retain the texture of natural material;
  • eco-friendly;
  • provide heat and sound insulation;
  • resistance to low temperatures;
  • it is possible to carry out repairs without special skills.

Disadvantages of wood finishing:

  • dampens, can swell, deform adjacent elements;
  • susceptible to decay if not given proper care;
  • possible development of mold, fungi.

Modern technologies of woodworking and protective equipment allow to extend the life of products up to 50 years. However, this means that the trim elements undergo regular preventative treatment - impregnation and painting.

Layout and decorative brick

Brick houses are decorated during the construction process with the same material, but due to the masonry features. Particularly spectacular is the appearance of the facade windows by the type of arch. Masonry is carried out with a protrusion of bricks outside the surface of the wall (most often it is ¼ the size of a brick). This method is feasible only in two cases: directly during the construction of the building or in the process of major repairs, when the windows are being replaced.

There is a wide range of decorative bricks used in the decoration of buildings. For him, one rule applies - when facing, it is necessary to take into account the shape and size of the windows on the facades, so that the decoration method looks harmonious.

Decorative brick

Result Material characteristic
Hyper pressed rounded Effective edging of window openings. Durability, environmental resistance. The addition of stone chips is applied. Color in various variations.
Ceramic Figured brick for window decoration - with 1 rounded corner.

There are other forms for internal and external corners, arches, cornices.

Excellent decorative qualities. Resistant to environmental influences.
Clinker Decorative effect due to the textured surface. High rates of strength, durability during operation.
Glazed color Perfect for original designs. The surface is glossy and matte. It can imitate various textures - leather, stone, wood. Color is represented by a wide palette. 100% moisture resistant.
Silicate Wide range of colors.

The cheapest type of decorative decorative bricks.

Window decoration using decorative brick implies strict observance of proportions and symmetry. So that the facade of the house does not lose the attractiveness of the appearance in the absence of skills, it is better to turn to specialists, otherwise you can lose not only time, but also money.

Siding on wide and narrow slopes

If siding was used for cladding the facade of buildings, then windows are made using so-called additional profiles.

Advantages of such a finish:

  • works take up little time;
  • the technology is standard and refined;
  • any type of design is completed from finished parts, according to the principle of the designer.
Window siding

This option has established itself as a popular and inexpensive. Any surfaces, joints and openings have their own types of specific elements. As such, decorative elements siding does not imply. Finishing is based on a combination of textures or using a contrasting color. There are several ways to use siding to frame windows, depending on their position relative to the wall:

  • window and wall at the same level - a special platband is used, under which the facade panels are wound;
  • slope width of 20 cm or less - used near the window profile. It closes the slope and acts as a platband, docking with the finish profile near the window and siding;
  • slope width of more than 20 cm - use chopped facade siding. From the side of the window it enters the finishing profile, and from the outside - into the corner profile.

Siding is good because it is easy to install and even people without special skills can cope with it.

Using a contrasting color for the platband, you can make the facade bright and attracting attention. The only limitation: siding denies using any other materials for decoration.

Natural and decorative stone

Natural stone is mainly used for decorating classic-style houses with large windows. Such decoration implies a solid foundation and strong walls, because its elements have significant weight. Shell rock, limestone, sandstone - these materials are most popular for finishing window openings. The result will be original and durable.

In addition to natural, artificial stone is also used in the decoration of window slopes. It is important that the frame of the window openings in this case should overlap with other facade elements. Most often, the basement appears in the ensemble, but depending on the design decision, the stone can clad the corners of the house or part of the wall.

As for the decorative variety of decorative stone. First of all, it is much lighter than the natural version. Color, texture, shades - the widest assortment is presented on the market, which allows to realize any project. This novelty of the construction market, among other things, has good thermal insulation and is resistant to weather conditions. It is made from natural materials using high-quality dyes that do not fade with time. This makes it easy to select the material, if necessary, replace the damaged area.

Gypsum

Gypsum does not lose its relevance and is one of the main materials for decorating facades, including creating stucco moldings and decoration of various elements.

Advantages of gypsum products can be called:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • a variety of forms - you can choose almost any option;
  • if some part of the facade was difficult, then the stucco molding for decoration can be made on the spot, due to the available forms.

Keep in mind that gypsum fragments are quite massive. This means that the foundation and walls of the house must be strong enough to cope with the load. Now gypsum products are mainly used in the reconstruction of old houses.

Summing up, we can say that gypsum:

  • burdensome construction of the facade due to the large weight, makes installation more difficult;
  • it's expensive;
  • susceptible to weathering.

If you need a material resistant to moisture and lighter, then it is worth giving preference to products made of polymer concrete.

Polyurethane

Stucco molding made of polyurethane is a great alternative to gypsum and stone. Lightweight, durable, and rain-resistant polymer material. Moisture-resistant, does not crumble, is resistant to cracking. The term of operation is up to 30 years.

Polyurethane finishing materials allow you to realize most of the design decisions. At the same time, the walls of the building do not carry a large load, and installation does not require much effort. Another of its advantages is that the customer can easily offer his own decor design if he is not satisfied with the available one.

Stucco molding is often used for a classic style, where windows often have a high height. This means that elements such as:

  • cornices;
  • moldings;
  • arches;
  • sockets;
  • pilasters;
  • rusty.

Even if there was a replacement of windows, it does not matter. The fastening of decorative elements is carried out using special adhesive compositions, or due to mechanical fasteners, if the product is large. Stucco molding can be painted in the desired color. It is usually used cream or white, although a modern design can use brighter and more beautiful solutions.

Window views

Choosing a window design with access to the facade, it is necessary to consider what they are made of:

  • wooden - here the principle of "like to like." Wood trim will look harmonious;
  • plastic windows (PVC) are almost universal in relation to all modern types of materials. For example, siding, decorative brick, decorative stone;
  • aluminum windows - mainly installed on industrial facilities, public buildings. As a rule, siding is used;
  • plastic windows (PVC plus reinforcing reinforcement). Also combined with modern, artificial finishes.

In addition, the shape and size of the windows must be taken into account. They can be small - ventilating or full wall like French. The shape can be standard rectangular or round, arched, lancet, and even polygonal.

What should be the slopes

Whatever the slopes are made of, their main task is to tightly close the gaps between the frame and the wall so that the mounting foam and seals are not exposed to moisture. This issue is especially relevant if windows are being replaced.

Plaster slopes are the cheapest option. It is used for all types of finishes. Minus of plaster in a short service life, so you have to monitor the appearance of cracks.

Drywall finish gives a better result compared to plaster. The material is more durable, cracks will not appear. The disadvantage is that it is glued to external slopes on the windows, after which they are putty and painted.

Styrofoam slopes. They are simply mounted, serve for a long time. Aesthetic, do not rust, retain their appearance. Good thermal insulation.

Slopes made of wood. Suitable exclusively for wooden facades. The material is expensive, it requires accurate selection according to the type of wood. The option is expensive. If the quality of the tree is poor, then it will swell, crack. Preventive measures are needed.

Slopes from plastic panels. They are in consumer demand. It is necessary to choose very carefully, since plastic for interior decoration when used outdoors will quickly warp, turn yellow.
