Decorating the kitchen, we focus on such details as a hob, oven, refrigerator, general design of the room. An equally important aspect is the choice of hoods for the kitchen. We will help with the decision, which hood to buy, so that it meets all the wishes and requests.

Cooker hood

What the hood is for and how it works

The hood provides air exchange in the room. During cooking, it is impossible to avoid the appearance of soot, fat, as well as odors, sometimes unpleasant. Over time, the mud, mixing with dust, settles on the walls. As a result, your kitchen looks untidy, a lot of time is spent on cleaning. These problems are solved by a kitchen air purifier.

The device works on the principle of forced ventilation. Special filters eliminate combustion products from the air. Hoods purify air in different ways, therefore they are divided into types:

  1. Flow type. Polluted air is cleaned by filtration, passes through the ventilation system and is discharged to the outside. Suitable for a spacious room, for example, 20 square meters. m

  3. Recirculation. Contaminated air is cleaned using a filter, and then released back already fresh. Not as effective as the flow type, the result strongly depends on the quality and condition of the filters, but this option also costs an order of magnitude cheaper. Suitable for your own home, where it is more difficult to remove ventilation yourself. It will also be a good solution for a small kitchen area, for example, 6m2.

What criteria should you choose a hood

There are a huge number of hood models. They all differ in performance, filtration method, type of installation, design and color, as well as other characteristics. We will tell you what hoods are for the kitchen.

Filter system

The polluted air purification system consists of two plates: disposable or reusable. The former resemble a plastic cassette; the cleaning surface is made of synthetic winterizer. A dirty filter should be replaced. Reusable steel or aluminum. Contaminated items are not removed, but cleaned and inserted back.

Filters can be coarse and fine cleaning. Coarse cleaning, otherwise called grease, as the metal mesh of the filter retains large particles of fat. It is used in flow type hoods. Fine cleaning is also called coal, traps fat, smoke, soot. Such a filter must be replaced, used in recirculation models. There is an additional mesh made of synthetic material. It also needs to be changed as it gets dirty.

Modern hoods have a dual filtration system: eliminate air polluting particles and unpleasant odors. Air loses about 96% of harmful impurities.

Appearance and design of the hood

When it comes to how to choose a hood, you need to take into account different designs:

  1. Hanging. Successful among buyers due to the low price and ease of installation. It works in a circulating mode, uses reusable filters. Most often, it is mounted to a wall or mounted under a cabinet.
  2. Dome. Another common name is mantelpiece. It looks like an umbrella with a pipe, can work both in flowing and in circulation mode. It looks stylish, serves as an interior decoration, and therefore is more expensive.
  3. Built in. This option must be built into a hanging cabinet with an open bottom above the stove. It connects to the duct, does not look bulky, as it is completely hidden in the closet. The cost is less than that of dome models, because the money does not go to decorate the decor.
  4. Island. This model is mounted above the island worktop, located in the center of the room. More often flow type, but also recirculating. It is quite expensive, but it looks spectacular and modern.

About fans and their power

The kitchen hood contains one or two fans. The exhaust power depends on the power of the fans. This is where the concept of performance comes from.

Productivity is the most important characteristic of every cleaning device. Productivity consists of how many cubic meters of air the device can clean or remove to the ventilation shaft in an hour of operation. Usually, this indicator fluctuates between 200-800 m3 / h.

The higher the power of the hood, the louder it will work. Absolutely silent models do not exist, but there are different operating modes, with a minimum of which you can achieve a quiet, non-annoying sound.

Control Panel - which is better?

The control panel is always present on the outside of the case, controls the operating modes of the device. They also come in many forms:

  1. Push-button. A simple option. There are buttons on the panel, each of which turns a certain mode of operation on and off. Among the shortcomings: the buttons may stop being pressed if you do not wipe the hood from greasy spots in a timely manner.
  2. Sensory. Convenient to use, controlled by touch. The LED instantly lights up, the device goes into the selected mode.
  3. Slider. The desired mode can be selected using the mechanical horizontal switch.
  4. Electronic. Remote control is possible using the remote control.

Hood dimensions

When answering the question of how to choose a hood for the kitchen, it is important to take into account the dimensions of the subject of technology, correlating them with the area of the room.

The most important principle - the air purification device must either correspond to the size of the stove, or be larger, but not less. Otherwise, not all the dirt will get into the filters, the performance will drop significantly. The most common option are models with a width of 50, 60 or 90 centimeters. The depth should be about 30-50 centimeters, the hood should not protrude much above the stove, otherwise you can hit it with your head. The height of the device does not play a particularly important role, usually between 1 or 1.5 meters.

What hood to choose for an electric stove? Here, the height at which the device is mounted above the hob plays a role. Above the electric stove, the hood can be hung at a distance of 60 centimeters, over a gas stove - at a distance of at least 70 centimeters from the surface. It is unacceptable to reduce this height, since the fat deposited on the walls or on the exhaust filter can ignite due to heat.

Additional "gadgets"

In addition to the basic set of functions, the device has a place for additional interesting features. We will talk about the most useful, about those that are useful in your home:

  1. Residual move. After turning off the device, the fan continues to run quietly for 5-15 minutes. Possible synchronization with the stove. Thus, the kitchen air will be maximally purified.
  2. Interval inclusion. Fresh air constantly enters the apartment. The fan runs quietly, and the air from the room is discharged into the street.
  3. Backlight. LED bulbs that equip most cooker hoods make cooking easier.
  4. Sensor reminiscent of cleaning. A light on the operating panel lights up, indicating that it is time to clean or replace the filter.
  5. If you will pick up a unique model for a lot of money, pay attention to the option offered by Siemens. The company has integrated a TV into the panel.

About the cost of cooker hoods

In stores in Moscow and other major cities of Russia on sale there are many models. On the sites of stores posted their detailed descriptions along with photos and reviews. The most popular hood manufacturers are Bosch, Siemens, Samsung, Zanussi, Gorenje, Hansa.

Hoods are divided by price:

  1. The most economical models are plastic, sometimes metal parts are present. On the panel buttons or sliders. Low productivity (up to 500 m3 / h). Lighting - incandescent lamps.
  2. Mid-priced options are aluminum, glass or stainless steel. On the panel buttons, sliders or sensor. Productivity does not exceed 700 m3 / h. Lighting - incandescent or halogen lamps.
  3. The most expensive models have the highest performance - up to 1300 m3 / h. The material of manufacture is high-quality, the finish can be made of valuable wood. On the panel there is a sensor and many sensors that control temperature, smoke, humidity. Management is carried out using the remote control. Lighting - halogen lamps.
