Without a hood system, it is impossible to imagine any modern kitchen where cooking takes place. Its functions include air purification, maintaining a microclimate and the removal of harmful substances. We wrote earlier about ventilation pipes for hoodsToday we’ll talk about boxes.

What are the hoods?

Hoods are of three main types (more details were written in this article): suspended, built-in, dome. Suspended compact, have cleaning filters and are hung directly above the stove, without duct and outlet to ventilation.

Kitchen hood

There are models with a metal filter, which do not need to be changed, but only periodically washed. Hoods have control panels: using the slider, button, touch, and electronic.

Electronically controlled devices are equipped with additional features, such as:

  • automatic activation during cooking;
  • automatic power amplification with increased air pollution;
  • the presence of an indicator when filling the filter;
  • automatic inclusion of lighting when a person approaches a stove.

Dome hoods are more like a fireplace element with an air duct and an outlet to the ventilation duct. Built-in models are installed in kitchen furniture in special niches.

Kitchen hood

There is a large selection of models with various additional functions. They also have a drawer and high power. Hoods work in two modes:

  • flow-through with a conclusion to the ventilation system;
  • with recirculation, where air is cleaned through filters that trap grease. Filters are disposable and reusable. Further final cleaning occurs through carbon filters. Air is cleared by 70%. Carbon filters must be changed as they become dirty.

The exhaust system and air purification removes excess moisture, unpleasant odors of frying, combustion products, carbon dioxide. Promotes fresh air and comfort.

Built-in range hood

A box is a certain design of various shapes and shapes, made of different types of materials, which disguises, hides the details of the duct and parts of the hood.

Gives the whole design an aesthetic look. Performing certain functional tasks, it determines the external design, combining with a kitchen set.

Types of hoods in shape and method of attachment

Having established what distance is from the duct to the stove, and also choosing the type, you can choose the design of the box. By the method of fastening can be:

  1. Open typethat is in plain sight. In this view, all the elements are visible and hidden by the box only the corrugation and the duct itself. They have a diverse design. The cost of such structures is much higher than the rest.
  2. Recessed - hidden from prying eyes. In this type, all elements are carefully closed. Only the front part is visible. It is more popular due to its compactness and simplicity. The built-in hood looks one with the kitchen furniture and is maintained in the same style and design.

The shape of the exhaust structures are:

  1. Island - Attaches directly to the ceiling, most often above the countertop and hob located in the middle of the kitchen. The kitchen is of the island type, and the countertop has a square or rectangular view.
  2. Wall mounted - is located on the wall. It takes into account the height of the ceiling and the free space on the wall. They can be domed, mantelpiece, pyramidal, rectangular in shape. This design can do without ventilation.

  1. Recessed - Convenient flat design for small kitchens. Fastens to a wall or directly to a box, does not have the big sizes of air ducts.
  2. Corner - has a triangular shape and is mounted in the corner of the walls and kitchen furniture above the corner hob.

Materials for choosing kitchen boxes, advantages and disadvantages

Decorative boxes that hide the elements of the ventilation system, perform not only the function of decor, but also reduce the noise of the hood motor. It is important what material the box is made of.

It must be resistant to moisture, temperature changes, not subject to chemical and mechanical effects during cooking.

A box of any material must be regularly cleaned of dust, grease and dirt. The materials from which the boxes are made have their pros and cons.

Therefore, when buying or making it yourself, you need to consider this. Designs are made of the following materials: plastic, metal, wood and drywall.

Plastic construction

Plastic is polyvinyl chloride. Plastic boxes have a round and rectangular shape. The rectangular box is more organic and looks good with cabinets in the kitchen.

Quick and easy to assemble. The material has great sound insulation, durable and has a long service life, not subject to corrosion. Easy to cut and fit in place. It is very light in weight.

Plastic decorative hood in the kitchen

The disadvantages of plastic include the fact that white with time becomes yellow, dull, gray. Forms dents under the weight of objects or from mechanical stress.

After a while, its surface becomes porous, where dust and dirt penetrate, which is difficult to remove. When assembling compounds of elements from plastic, the sequence must be observed.

For tightness, so that dirty air does not fall on the surface of the box and does not penetrate into the room, silicone should be applied to the joints. There are many different connecting parts for connection on sale.

With their help, the channels are connected in any direction and at any angle. Structural fasteners must often be installed along the entire length at a distance of not less than a meter, and also strengthened at the joints between the parts.

Metal construction

A box or hood made of metal is a more reliable design. Stainless steel is an ideal starting material. Conventional metal is powder coated.

The stainless steel is easily washed, does not absorb dirt, strong and durable. It features a stylish modern design. There are no scratches on it. The material is not subject to corrosion.

The disadvantages include the high price and the presence of a uniform color gamut. The complexity of the assembly, the need to comply with the accuracy of measurements. The construction is heavy and requires reliable mounting.

Metal decorative hood box

A box made of this material does not protect against noise, and fingerprints that are difficult to wash remain on the surface. It does not always fit into the interior of the furniture, it looks bulky.

When assembling a metal frame, welding is used and cut with a grinder. If the sheet of metal is thin, replace welding with metal glue. Sheets overlap.

Drywall Constructions

Drywall - an affordable material has gained great popularity among other types of materials. For the manufacture of ventilation ducts, moisture resistant brands are chosen.

Cheap lightweight material - drywall is easy to assemble in any configuration and shape. It is necessary to install metal profiles for installation.

Allows you to assemble a box to hide the duct for a short time. When working with drywall, care must be taken, since the material is quite fragile.

The material is convenient and easy to process, so the box can be made and assembled by yourself, without unnecessary expenses and attracting a master. The finished box can be processed, puttied and applied with finishing tiles, wallpaper, mosaics and other decor materials.

With proper operation and pre-treatment from impacts, it will last a long time.

Decorative box made of wood

A wooden box looks harmonious with a kitchen set of the same material. Having the same properties, it will be part of the kitchen, complementing the design of a certain style, also fulfilling the functional purpose.

Wood is an environmentally sound solid material that requires little maintenance. The disadvantage is the severity of the finished structure.

Rules for choosing a duct section

Ducts come in plastic and aluminum, corrugated and round. Rectangular structures harmoniously look against the background of rectangular cabinets.

Round ducts are more efficient due to their lower resistance to air passage. Corrugated pipes are soft, easily bend at any angle and weightless.

They poorly isolate noise and in the inner surface, having a ribbed structure, quickly become dirty. During installation, it is recommended to stretch the folds of the corrugation as much as possible to reduce the relief for dirt accumulation.

In order to get the result of good cleaning and fresh air influx, as well as to ensure that the duct works without interruption and noise, it is necessary to calculate the size and diameter of the duct.

The diameter of this design should match or be slightly larger than the diameter for output at the hood. A smaller diameter reduces the throughput and operational efficiency, as the resistance of the air passing increases.

Duct section selection table

The power of the hood used is still reduced. When installing the duct, sharp corners cannot be planned, angles of 90 °. To prevent air from returning, a check valve must be installed.

Ventilation ducts must be above the hob. The length of the pipes for air outlet is provided no more than 3 meters.

To maximize the use of the hood and work correctly, the distance between the stove and the hood is kept no more than 75 cm.

When choosing hoods for the kitchen and baskets for decor, you need to rely on the technical parameters, dimensions of the kitchen, personal preference, financial situation. Also study the characteristics of materials, their functionality.

Given all the points, you can choose the acceptable hood options for your kitchen. Purchase a box or do it yourself, hide bulky and ugly parts of the duct. And your kitchen will get an individual stylish look.
