A lot of harmful substances and unpleasant odors often accumulate in rooms. Particular attention should be paid to tobacco smoke, which is present in the apartment, even if there are no smokers in the family. A special air purifier designed specifically for this purpose helps to cope with the scourge.

The essence of the device
There is a huge amount of muck that we do not see: allergens, dust, bacteria and smoke. They are present in varying amounts in any home, getting inside the room through windows, ventilation, etc. There is no salvation at the household level, even if you live on top of a skyscraper (it will help from smokers, but not from dust). An air purifier is ideal, but how does it work?
The principle of operation of the cleaner is very simple, but extremely effective:
- each model of the device is equipped with a fan, the wings of which during operation cause a stream of air entering the device;
- being inside, polluted air is passed through a special filter system;
- after which the purified air enters the room, and all unpleasant and harmful particles remain on the filter.
Here is the most common tobacco smoke air purifier powered by a water filter. A little later we will get acquainted with the principle of its work in more detail:
This is how standard air purifiers work, but there are also improved ones that are equipped with ionizers. These are devices that supply purified air with ions, which, in turn, have a disinfecting effect. In multifunctional devices (the cost of which is clearly higher), there is a humidification function (saves indoor air from overdrying).
All air purifiers work from an electric network. The more serious the characteristics of a particular model, the more electricity will be consumed.
How air purifiers work, how effective they are in combating tobacco smoke in this video tells the consultant on purification devices.
Types of Air Purifiers
It's time to consider each type of device separately:
- Standard air purifier.
As mentioned, the air is drawn into the device, it is cleaned through filters that trap harmful particles, after which only pure oxygen remains at the output (as much as possible).
- Water purifier.
Here, the role of the filter is not performed by a specific mechanism, but by water, in which special products are diluted. Oxygen does not linger under water, but pollen, hair and dangerous substances from cigarette smoke confidently settle at the bottom.
- Ionizer.
This is not a separate type of device, but rather an addition to it. The principle of operation is as follows:
As you can see in the figure, most of the models have three stages of cleaning:
- preliminary, where the bulk of the dirt is retained;
- the main, completely neutralizing the remains of harmful particles from the air;
- final, finally eliminates unpleasant odors and eliminates microparticles remaining after cleaning (this also includes moisturizers).
Filter types
Filters are mainly divided into three varieties:
- Reticulate.
The most budgetary option for filtering, in fact being a very tight weave of many grids. It copes well with dust, wool and other coarse dirt, but it is useless against toxins, microorganisms and cigarette smoke.
- Carbonic.
This type of filter is based on activated carbon. Yes, the very one that we drink 1 tablet per 1 kg of weight during indigestion. And they drink it because it has a sorbing effect and attracts mucks and toxins, which it ultimately removes from the body along with it. This is exactly how the air filter works.
Due to its significant and small pores, it absorbs gas molecules at the physical level. Elegantly copes with the results of the activities of fans of smoking tobacco. But it has a key minus: if there is high humidity in the air, the effectiveness of such a filter drops by at least 2 times.
They also cope well with molecules with a high molecular weight, but if the mass is too low (formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc.), such molecules will pass through the filter, like a knife through melt butter.
However, the use of chemisorbents can correct the situation, however, in a humid environment, such filters are still ineffective.
- HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorption; highly effectivedelayparticles).
A dust filter with an incomparable quality of air purification. The essence of its work and the structure of the device is in three effects, which you can see in the figures below:
Each layer in HEPA filters is repeated several times, ideally clearing the air of the smallest particles of dirt, molecules and tobacco smoke. There are several classes of this filter, but H11 is enough for a house or apartment - with this class of device 95% of the most different substances are delayed.
Do not worry about the missed 5%, because with such a concentration of particles, even harmful ones, the air is 100% safe for the human body, even for babies. And compared with untreated air, the use of filtration exceeds the figure of 1,000%.
What each of these filters is, you can see in the figure below:
Popular models
Cigarette smoke is a special type of environmental pollution. All types of filters cope with it with a certain efficiency, but the presence of additional functions in the cleaners increases the benefit of any device several times.
Ionizer copes with harmful substances, but ozonizer especially good in combating nicotine smoke fibers. However, it should be borne in mind that the level of ozonation should not exceed certain standards (do not use an ozonizer for an industrial scale in a small apartment). This can have the completely opposite effect: large particles will linger and break down, but nicotine will move freely around the room.
In the battle with tobacco smoke, the following models of cleaners show themselves perfectly:
- MCK75JVM-K from Daikin.
It has five steps for cleaning the premises:
- catechin (animal hair, coarse dust, bacteria removal);
- plasma ionizer;
- electrostatic filter (breaks down molecules of unpleasant odors and various formaldehydes);
- pleated filter (viruses, bacteria and other substances passed through previous filters are absorbed and decomposed);
- deodorizing catalyst, finally breaking down odors before air supply.
His work takes place in a quiet mode, manages his business quickly, and leaves no trace of unpleasant odors, which is especially useful for smoke from smoking.
It has such technical characteristics:
- air run - 450 cubic meters m / h .;
- suitable for rooms up to 46 sq. m;
- weight - 11 kg;
- price - from 45 thousand rub.
The only drawback of this model is that it cannot be called a budget one.
- Panasonic F-VXF70.
A great model of cleaner that copes with smoke and other harmful particles in the air. It has:
- hydrofiltration (water filter);
- deodorizing filter;
- combined.
In addition to eliminating unpleasant odors and microorganisms, this model moisturizes indoor air. The main thing is to monitor the level of humidity so as not to harm the body, because everything is fine, but in moderation.
Main characteristics:
- serves air in a volume of 400 cubic meters. m / h .;
- area - up to 52 square meters m;
- weight - 10 kg;
- price - from 30 thousand rub.
- BONECO 2055D.
An excellent small portable water purifier of the budget option, highly controlling smoke and unpleasant odors. Of course, the general air purification from harmful trace elements is also at altitude:
- water consumption for cleaning the premises - 300 ml / h;
- for rooms up to 50 square meters. m;
- weight - 6 kg;
- capacity - 7 l;
- price –16 thousand rub.
When purchasing an air purifier for any purpose, it is extremely important to study the characteristics of the device. It makes no sense to take excessively serious indicators of purification or ionization, because if the established norm is exceeded, there will only be harm, not benefit. Choose devices with the necessary functions, and they can cope with tobacco smoke without any problems.
