Checking ventilation in the school: air exchange rates and the procedure for checking its effectiveness

Many parents hear their children complain about stuffiness in the classroom, headaches during lessons. The reason for the lethargy of schoolchildren, lack of interest in the subject can be not only the complexity of the presentation of the material, but also the lack of oxygen. Ensuring effective air exchange is important for maintaining the immunity of children, as well as for high brain activity. The psychological comfort of the child during training depends on him.

Timely inspection of ventilation at the school will help determine the correct operation of the system, the compliance of the indoor air with the standards established by law. And who should conduct it and how often - we will talk about this in our article.

Influence of air exchange on the effectiveness of training

instagram viewer

It has been scientifically proven that with a sufficient amount of fresh air, students get sick less, behave more actively in class, and remember new material better. And with a lack of oxygen, they feel drowsiness, depression, irritability.

Since children spend up to 80% of their time in classrooms on weekdays, it is important to create comfortable conditions for staying at school by ensuring effective air exchange.

Stuffy in class

The perception of information in the lesson depends not only on the complexity of the subject, the form of presentation of the material. Lack of oxygen reduces overall mental alertness, which affects children's academic performance

The legislation establishes the frequency of inspection of the school ventilation system, but an annual inspection is not able to provide control over the efficiency of air exchange in changing conditions, for example, when the air temperature outside the window changes, after the start of heating season.

Oxygen delivery rate can decrease if any of the following factors are present:

  • old school building equipped with an ineffective ventilation system;
  • plastic windows without vents, which ensure tightness, do not let air through from the street;
  • outdated ventilation system or its complete absence.

Writing off the lethargy of the child for the weather or the season, do not forget about the sufficient amount of oxygen that must enter the body. If the ventilation system does not cope with its functions, it is important to ventilate the room during breaks or raise the issue of the possibility of equipping windows supply valves.

The main tasks of ventilation in the school

To ensure effective air exchange, the decay products must be dynamically replaced with portions of fresh air without reducing the temperature in the room. Opened windows cannot cope with such a task in winter. Hot children, going into ventilated auditoriums, will catch colds.

The school must provide comfort during learning and be safe. Exhaust air is often entered through a corridor, doors. This type of intake is considered one-time, since the amount of outgoing air corresponds to the volume of incoming air.

Lethargy and irritability of students

The amount of carbon dioxide at the level of 0.1% reduces performance. With an increase in its concentration to 0.2%, chronic fatigue, drowsiness, and headache are noted

In accordance with the requirements of sanitary rules, air exchange in ordinary classrooms is allowed with the help of natural ventilation. Higher requirements are imposed on physics, chemistry, workshops, gyms.

Air exchange rates in classrooms

When checking the ventilation system in the school, the efficiency of air exchange is taken into account, regulated by SNiPom 41-01-2003, SNiPom II-65-73.

The main criteria by which the efficiency of ventilation is assessed include:

  1. Air quality - a sufficient volume of purified air masses with a low carbon dioxide content will allow teachers and students to concentrate on the learning process.
  2. Air exchange rate - since during the training students move little, the prompt replacement of decay products with clean air will make them feel good.
  3. Noise level - ventilation should not only ensure efficient air exchange, but also not create much noise during operation.

A feature of schools and other educational institutions is the presence of offices with various purposes. Classes for training, chemistry rooms, gyms, teaching rooms, catering facilities have individual air exchange rates.

In addition to different purposes, during the educational process, the premises differ in occupancy, therefore, for compliance with the recommended standards requires efforts, to ensure constant monitoring of technical system state.

Air intake through windows

Unlike private living quarters, it will not be possible to provide fresh air through the windows in schools, since most of the school year falls on cold weather. Therefore, the main role in creating air exchange is assigned to ventilation.

To check the ventilation system, to determine its effectiveness, the indicators of the Sanitary Rules are taken as a basis:

  • air exchange rates for classrooms, laboratories - at least 16 cubic meters per hour heated air (per student), for gyms - 80 cubic meters per hour per person;
  • temperature regime in classes must lie within - 18 - 22 ° С;
  • carbon dioxide concentration should not exceed 800 - 1,000 ppm;
  • noise limitgenerated by ventilation should not exceed 110 dB.

In laboratory rooms, the air is polluted not only in the process of human life, but also by harmful substances that are formed as a result of chemical reactions. Therefore, laboratories must be equipped with forced systems, and the air must be removed from them through a special ventilation cabinet.

The bathroom must also be provided with an additional volume of compulsory air, which, in accordance with sanitary requirements, must be:

  • 25 cubic meters per hour for each urinal;
  • 50 cubic meters per hour for each toilet.

Air supply is carried out under the ceiling in rooms of standard height, and in sports halls - at a height of at least 2 meters from the floor. Compliance with the rules will help to avoid drafts.

Features of ventilation check

Determination of the efficiency of the ventilation system is carried out by accredited organizations using high-tech equipment. After the completion of the check, calculations are carried out, on the basis of which an expert opinion is made.

The survey compares the results obtained with the regulatory requirements. Moreover, not only the efficiency of air exchange is assessed, but also its frequency.

Inspection by a ventilation specialist at the school

The highest measurement accuracy is provided by specialized devices. For the survey, an agreement can be concluded with an accredited organization

Documentation check

Verification of the documentation confirming the efficiency of the ventilation systems is checked by Rospotrebnadzor. If there are violations, the administration of the educational institution is responsible.

If deviations are detected during the verification process, professionals provide recommendations for debugging the system. Rostechnadzor is checking the documentation. If deficiencies are found, the administration of the educational institution will face penalties.

The frequency, timing of inspections, as well as the norms, are established by sanitary norms:

  • the use of the ventilation system is allowed after commissioning, obtaining technical passports;
  • SanPin regulates the frequency of inspection at least once a year or upon delivery of the facility, as well as in schools, the ventilation system is checked before the start of the school year;
  • natural, general exchange networks are checked at least once every 3 years.

The above guidelines are valid for ventilation that works correctly.

When commissioning work has not been carried out or was carried out incorrectly, ventilation systems often operate with reduced efficiency.

Conclusions and useful video on the topic

The school is a rather complex object, its features are important to take into account when arranging ventilation. Five helpful tips from the professionals in the video will help ensure effective air exchange and a healthy classroom environment:

When the organization of air exchange is carried out correctly, there will be no problems with ventilation checks at the school. However, not every educational institution has the ability to upgrade the system. Many structures are decades old, and significant funds are required to upgrade equipment.
