Features of linen curtains
Due to the large assortment of synthetic fabrics that are most often found in modern interiors, not all housewives are inclined to buy linen curtains. The material, long forgotten by society, seems to be an unfortunate decision in terms of the practical use of the canvas. It is necessary to remind about the advantages of linen fabric:
- environmentally friendly product - natural raw materials do not cause allergic reactions and can be used even in children's rooms;
- high wear resistance - the appearance of the material does not deteriorate for a long time with careful attitude and care. They may not lose their attractiveness for several decades;
- resistance to pollution - linen products practically do not accumulate dust. The dirt that appears on them can be easily washed off at home without resorting to special chemical treatments;
- resistance to ultraviolet rays - linen almost does not perceive solar radiation, sometimes the material even absorbs ultraviolet light;
- hygroscopicity - due to low moisture absorption, linen fabrics quickly absorb water and dry just as quickly after washing;
- good air permeability - in extreme heat in rooms with linen curtains, it is easy to breathe, there is no stuffiness;
- no accumulation of static electricity - this is a big plus if the curtains are next to household appliances;
- texture and plasticity of the material;
- a variety of shades - curtains can be natural shades, as well as bleached or painted in a different color.
Like any material, flax has several disadvantages:
- susceptibility to creasing - after washing, linen is very difficult to iron with an iron;
- a high degree of shrinkage - after the first washings, linen curtains often shrink. Experts recommend purchasing decated materials;
- poor resistance to aggressive chemicals - many laundry chemicals can be destructive to natural fabrics. It is necessary to select powders and gels intended for things made of flax;
- high price.
Like any natural fabric, linen is not cheap. But its qualities justify the high cost of things made from it.
There is one more nuance worth noting. Although linen curtains are easy to dye, they will not be able to achieve bright and saturated shades with them. If you plan to make curtains an accent accessory, then they should be decorated with decor.
Linen curtains in the interior
Linen can fit into any style, but first you need to find out what types it is:
- unbleached fabric, similar to homespun cloth with a neutral gray-brown tint;
- thin or dense material that imitates burlap;
- clarified flax with a cream or yellowish tone;
- linen fabric with lavsan or silk additives, which improve some of the qualities of the main material: lavsan reduces the degree of creasing of the fabric, and silk makes the surface of the canvas smooth and shiny.
Provence
Recently, the interiors of some city apartments have begun to resemble a cozy French setting with subtle rustic features. Sunny Provence differs in many ways from the rustic direction. To soften the heavy tones and smooth out the rough forms of the rural look, many graceful lines and delicate shades are used in the design.
A popular option for linen curtains for the kitchen are short cafe curtains. Such curtains are decorated modestly - with a floral edging or a simple frill. Curtains in turquoise, green, blue, beige or sand tones will look neat and attractive.
Country
A space with a warm and cozy atmosphere also welcomes natural materials, so linen curtains will come in handy here. Canvases in natural gray shades are in perfect harmony with wood trim, wooden furniture, as well as with various accessories made of birch bark or clay.
To preserve the natural light of the room, the windows are draped with whitewashed curtains: such curtains help to block daylight. The snow-white canvas can be complemented with light lace or multi-colored embroidery. Some housewives like to embroider curtain hooks that look neat when assembled.
For country style, not only smooth variations of linen are suitable. Rough loose fabric reminiscent of burlap can be successfully presented in an interior in combination with bright finishes, for example, with red and white checkered bows.
Eco style
For windows, a canvas is used in natural shades of gray. The drapery looks organic with all the finishes and furnishings of the minimalist industrial interior. In spacious living rooms, you can use voluminous monophonic curtains.
Mediterranean style
The interior is often decorated with shells, images of fish or sailing ships. Narrow and wide color stripes can be observed in decoration and textiles. For curtains, you can apply a blue range of shades in combination with a sand color. To make the curtains more attractive, they need to be decorated with blue satin ribbons, soft blue or white lace or thick aquamarine embroidery.
Scandinavian direction
Curtains in Scandinavian kitchen interiors are distinguished by simplicity of cut, environmentally friendly materials and light shades. Linen curtains in white will be the perfect solution for decorating a hall window.
To some, the abundance of white may seem boring. In this case, you can use another shade in the curtains - orange, green or turquoise. The use of Roman models will help to add coziness and warmth to the room, the bright part of which will repeat the main color of the furniture set.
In the interior of the Scandinavian direction, white curtains can be replaced with milky, pearl or vanilla variations.
Linen curtains for the kitchen
When choosing linen curtains for the kitchen, you should make a choice in favor of practical options. Short curtains will be the best option for a cooking area. Grease or grime often forms on the floor and contaminates the bottom of long curtains.
Linen curtains for the kitchen in the form of Roman curtains are considered an equally practical solution. They can be plain or with a small floral pattern. These curtains fit perfectly into the design with modern appliances and built-in furniture. Due to the stretched design, the fabric never wrinkles and always looks fresh.
Linen curtains in the living room
Linen curtains in the living room interior bring freshness and lightness. Smooth fabric curtains look good. The simple option fits easily into modern living room designs. The traditional curtains for the living room window are curtains of two sheets with soft folds. In this case, it is not recommended to decorate the curtains with such decorative details as ruffles, frills or beads. But neat laces or ribbons will not break the interior concept.
Another solution for decorating a hall window is Japanese curtains. The top and bottom of the rectangular canvases are fixed through the stitched holes to the guides along which they move, opening or closing the window opening. In the room of the Japanese direction, light curtains with a pattern of large flowers or a delicate floral pattern will be appropriate.
Linen visually becomes airy and light when used in the manufacture of French, English or Austrian curtains.
Despite the simple appearance of the material, in various variations of curtains, linen becomes a luxurious material and adds harmony to the interior.
