Instrument operating requirements

Humans have steamed for hundreds of years. For this, a pot of water was previously used, into which a special tab was inserted. Food for heat treatment was laid out on it, after which the pan was put on the fire and thus the food was cooked. Nowadays, the cooking process has become easier and more convenient thanks to the steamer.

To understand how to assemble a steamer, you must carefully read the instructions for the device, which describes in detail the assembly process.

When the device is ready, you need to decide exactly where in your kitchen it will stand:

  1. How the steamer worksA flat, solid surface is required. For example, a table.
  2. It is not necessary to place the device on or near the hob. During cooking, excess steam will come out of the appliance and possibly splashing water.
  3. The electric cord of the steamer must be positioned so that neither you nor your household can accidentally touch it.
  4. The instructions for use for the steamer recommend that before turning on the device, be sure to check the presence of water in the tank. Although Tefal steamers are protected against switching on without water, it is still worth checking this nuance yourself before turning on.
  5. Do not place the appliance too close to the edge of the table to avoid accidentally dropping it. Also try to avoid placing the unit too close to a wall or cabinet doors.
  6. There should be no kitchen cupboards above the steamer during operation. During operation, excess steam will come out of it, which can damage the furniture with prolonged contact.
  7. When the steamer is in operation, do not touch it with bare hands. If necessary, be sure to wear kitchen gloves or mittens.
  8. To avoid the formation of condensation on the ceiling and walls, the device must be placed in a well-ventilated area.

Inside any steamer there is a container into which clean water must be poured before starting work. When heated, water turns into steam, which has a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius and above. Above the water tank, containers with holes are placed for the unhindered passage of steam. Foods to be steamed are placed in these containers. Thanks to this, all nutrients and vitamins are retained in the products.

Water filling rules

The loading of the device always starts from the very bottom. In this case, there will be no opportunity to make a mistake, and the food will be cooked as it should:

  1. Home steamersThe quality of the water used directly affects the quality of food preparation. You should not pour ordinary tap water into the device, because before getting on the tap, it passes through pipes that have not been repaired for many years, so it is not known what we have at the exit. It is best to use purified water that is sold in bottles. As a last resort, use a regular household filter to remove excess impurities from water.
  2. In the tank of any steamer there are marks for the minimum and maximum water level. Don't go to extremes. Fill in water so that its level is above the minimum, but slightly below the maximum. Typically, the maximum water level is sufficient to operate the device for 40-45 minutes. But in different models, this time may differ. With constant use, you yourself will find out how long the water in your device lasts.
  3. After pouring water into the steamer, install a drip tray to collect condensate and excess water in food. The pallet is required. If it is absent, excess moisture with fat from the food will get onto the heating element. This should be avoided.
  4. The last step is to bookmark products. After bookmarking, set the timer for the required cooking time and turn on the steamer. Most models, after the end of the process, emit a sound signal and turn off automatically.

In theory, everything seems to be simple. In fact, the practice is not very different from theory, but you still need to adhere to certain rules when preparing various products.

Product bookmarking principles

How to choose a steamerIf you have a multi-storey model, put the food with the longest cooking time in the lower container, since it is in the lower compartment that the maximum temperature is obtained. For example, if you are cooking eggs, then it takes 10 minutes to cook them in the lower container, but if they are placed on a higher level, the cooking time will increase by 5 minutes. If the eggs are to be cooked on the third level, then they will have to cook for 20 minutes, etc.

Also note that convection in the steamer occurs from top to bottom. So, the more flavored food is best placed on the lower shelf and the odorless food on top. If you want the vegetables to be saturated with meat juice and flavor, place them under the lamb or beef container. Try to stack food so that all openings in the container are not covered. It is through these holes that steam passes to the upper tiers.

Keep in mind that cooking times will depend on where the food is in the containers. Foods placed in the center will take longer to cook than those placed at the edges. Try to place large pieces of vegetables or meat closer to the sides of the containers.

Remember to check the water level while cooking. Some models of steamers are able to signal about its shortage, but not all. If the food is cooked for more than 40 minutes, you will need to add water as it will boil off quickly enough.

Restrictions on the use of food

Steamer control featuresAny kitchen appliance has restrictions on the products intended for it. Agree, you don't cook pasta in an electric kettle, and don't cook soup in an electric waffle iron. The double boiler was no exception. You should not try to cook pasta in it, as at the exit you risk getting an incomprehensible sticky lump. Also, don't experiment with legumes or mushrooms. In this case, the cooking time will drag on for 3-4 hours, during which you will need to constantly add water.

Do not add salt when cooking in a double boiler.. It is best to season the food with salt when it is already on the plate. But if you do decide to add salt right in the cooking process, keep in mind that you will need it. slightly more than usual, because during convection, part of the salt will flow along with the water into the sump steamers.

Steamer Dishes

In a double boiler, you can easily cook manti, dumplings, dumplings, chicken, meat or vegetable cutlets. In addition, the following can be very tasty:

  • How to use a steamerPorridge. To prepare porridge, a special container with no holes must be included with the steamer.
  • Potatoes, beets, carrots and other vegetables. For example, corn or cauliflower.
  • Fish or meat in foil.
  • Omelettes. To do this, use a container without holes. It is into it that you need to pour the egg mass, having previously lubricated the container with vegetable oil.
  • Biscuits. In this case, the dough is again poured into a container without holes. When baking a biscuit, cover it with foil on top.

Surely, complete with a double boiler, you will receive other interesting recipes for cooking various dishes. We advise you to try them too.

Proper care of the appliance

Allow the steamer to cool down properly after cooking. After that, pour out the remaining water and try to thoroughly rinse all containers of the device immediately. Do not leave the device dirty for a long time. In this case, the remains of the food will stick to the walls of the tanks and then it will be much more difficult to remove them. Otherwise, there are no special instructions for the care of the steamer.

Some people mistakenly compare a steamer to a multicooker. But these are completely different devices, both in terms of operation and in the dishes that can be cooked in them. More functional in this regard, of course, is a multicooker. But for the price it will be much more expensive. For those who love tasty and healthy food, food cooked in a double boiler will satisfy your taste.
