Ventilation appliances are a prerequisite for cleanliness and comfort in the kitchen. They remove combustion products from the air and ensure that there is no burning on the surrounding objects. Hoods protect furniture from small particles of grease and corrosive kitchen odors. But in order for the ventilation to work reliably and efficiently, the distance between the hood and the stove must be correctly maintained.

Varieties and purpose of hoods
According to the principle of operation, exhaust devices are divided into two types: circulating and equipped with an air duct. Inside the first, carbon filters are installed through which air passes, is cleaned and returns back to the room. They are suitable for installation in small kitchens where there is no space for an air duct. In this case, the distance from the hood to the stove is made small.
The second type of hoods are connected to the ventilation system. With their help, polluted kitchen air is discharged to the outside. Such devices are designed for installation in large rooms.
Fume hoods are also distinguished by design:-
Flat surface - the most popular type, distinguished by its convenience and compactness. This is a circulation-type device that cleans the incoming air from impurities, then returns it to the kitchen. A carbon filter is installed inside it, which requires regular cleaning and replacement of filtration elements.
- Domed devices are also popular with consumers. They usually take kitchen air outside, but there are models equipped with built-in filters.
- With an inclined surface. These elegant designs are a subspecies of exhaust domes. They are very convenient, as they are located far from the head of the worker and do not interfere with cooking. Models available with adjustable tilt center.
- Built-in. They have air ducts built into the kitchen cabinet.
- Tabletop. These appliances are mounted directly into the hob.
When buying an exhaust hood, it is better to consult with experts about its capacity. In a small kitchen, you should not hang a bulky powerful unit, and a weak hood is not suitable for a large one. The size of the cooker hood must match the parameters of the hob.
Optimal parameters
Experts have developed the optimal standard distances from the gas stove to the hood. The height of the hood above the gas stove according to the standard is not lower than 75-85 cm, above the electric stove it is installed at a height of 65-75 cm. This distance must be strictly maintained.
If you hang the device higher, then it will not absorb air well, which is why fumes and odors will quickly spread throughout the room. If it is lower, it will interfere with cooking, and there is a risk of overheating of the device, which will deteriorate its coating or ignite. To determine which hood is suitable for the kitchen, the following factors must be taken into account:
- type of hob;
- room design;
- unit power;
- technical installation standards.
It is better to entrust the installation of the hood to specialists, but a person who is self-confident can do it on his own. To install a ventilation hood with air circulation, you need to calculate the installation height and mark the necessary points on the wall surface.
Holes are drilled in the wall for fasteners. The hood is installed on self-tapping screws and hooks that are included in the kit.
Instruments with duct
Air duct units are installed in the same way as circulation units. After installation, a chimney is mounted to the body, then turned on to check the operation. If the hood does not work well, then the joints with the ventilation system and the integrity of the pipes are inspected.
Usually air ducts are made of thick foil. In order not to disrupt the design of the room, they are covered with PVC or drywall boxes. The most efficient duct design is with short, straight pipes and few elbows. If there are too many bends, they will interfere with the passage of air.
An electrical outlet for connecting the hood is mounted at a distance of 2.5 m from the floor. It should be located 10-20 cm above the wall cabinets, to the left or right of the duct. It is best to use grounded electrical outlets for hoods. In case of sudden power surges, they will turn off and protect the device from burnout.
In order for the devices to work effectively, they need to be monitored. There are several tips for taking care of:
- After each switching on, the device must be wiped from grease and dust.
- Do not turn off the hood immediately after cooking. It is left to work for a few more minutes so that it absorbs all impurities.
- The charcoal filters are changed every six months.
Properly installed hoods will purify the air in the room and ensure the cleanliness of the surrounding objects. When buying, you should choose the model that matches the size of the kitchen, the interior, and the preferred cleaning method. During installation, for efficient and safe operation, the norms of the distance from the hob to the hood, defined in the technical documentation, must be observed.
