E14 cartridge: application features and rules for choosing LED bulbs

Socket UNIVersal for electric lamp E14 base For many years the market has been leading in terms of the number of sales of lamps with a screw base, and they can be installed in the corresponding holder. There are several types of these parts now, but not all of them are popular. The most widespread are only two types: cartridge e14 and e27. Not everyone knows how they differ and in what situations they are used.

Characteristics of the E14 cartridge

The first on the market were threaded sockets for e27 bulbs and quickly became a success. The marking of the screw caps of the lamps is quite simple:

  • E - type and in this case it is "Edison screw".
  • 14 - base diameter equal to 14 mm.

Thus, the main difference between the two types of cartridges is only their size. At the same time, adapters are now being produced and, if necessary, you can screw the E27 light bulb into the E14 socket. At first, the E 14 was actively used in various household appliances, such as gas stoves.

However, now on sale you can find a fairly large number of chandeliers in which cartridges of this type are also installed. The disadvantages of the E14 base can be attributed only the power of the produced bulbs - up to 60 watts. However, technologies do not stand still, and the usual incandescent lamp is gradually becoming a thing of the past.

Application of LED lamps

Energy-saving devices are becoming more and more popular. The only factor hindering their widespread use was the relatively high cost. Currently, the situation is changing and more and more people are switching to light sources manufactured in accordance with new technologies.

The main advantage of LED lamps is the ability to emit a higher luminous flux in comparison with analogs equipped with a classic filament. Moreover, they consume an order of magnitude less electricity. On average, an LED light source is six times more economical. They are superior in this and fluorescent lamps, which, moreover, have two significant drawbacks:

  • LED bulbs E14 (minion)Subtle flicker that negatively affects the functioning of the organs of vision. Although a person practically does not feel it, the eyes get tired over time.
  • The presence of mercury vapors in fluorescent light sources increases the risks during operation, and also requires special disposal.

Modern LED lamps are devoid of these disadvantages. They do not contain substances hazardous to human health and the environment, and the eyes do not irritate. In addition, you should remember about the smaller dimensions of lamps with an e14 base, because they are most often used in built-in luminaires.

Broad prospects also open up in terms of interior design, since LED light sources can be colored.

Lighting device design

All lighting devices of this type have approximately the same design and contain the following elements:

  • Dispersion flask.
  • Light emitting elements.
  • PCB for mounting LEDs and dissipating heat.
  • Radiator made of anodized metal such as aluminum.
  • Lamp control board or driver.
  • Insulator made of polymeric materials.
  • Base / plinth.

Selection rules

When choosing these devices, you should adhere to several recommendations:

  • The base must necessarily correspond to the size of the cartridge that is installed in the lighting device.
  • You should give preference to the products of well-known companies, since their products can last longer than no name-manufacturers.
  • When installing LED lamps instead of classic light sources with a filament, it is necessary to choose an analogue according to the power of the luminous flux. This information is indicated on the packaging, and there are also special tables.
  • A well-made product should not flicker when glowing. If this happens, then most likely there is a problem with the device control circuitry.
  • An opaque bulb reduces the luminous flux intensity by an average of 15-30%.

In LED bulbs, in addition to the power indicator, there is one more parameter - the color temperature. It shows the tonality of the light flux that is emitted by the bulb, and the unit of measurement is Kelvin (K). Visually, differences in lighting can be determined using a special scale.

There are currently three lamp temperature ranges:

  • Warm white - 2000-3000K.
  • Neutral white - 3800-4500K.
  • Cold white - over 4800K.

Many studies have been carried out and now we can safely say that LED lamps with a temperature range of 2800-4500K are the best choice for use in residential premises. Cold white light devices are most commonly used in public spaces and in manufacturing.
