Modern telephones are superior to old ones in many ways. They have become more reliable and have new features. To ensure uninterrupted operation of the device, 2 conditions must be met:
- Availability of a working line between the subscriber and the PBX.
- Possibility of electrical connection of the telephone to the mains.
Technological progress has seriously changed the design of landline telephones and the way they are connected. However, the principle of their work remained the same. The RJ 11 telephone socket has three main elements:
- The case is most often made of plastic.
- Contacts are brass parts, with the help of which the passage of electric current is ensured.
- Terminals - needed to connect wires.
To protect against accidental short circuiting, the socket contacts are recessed into the housing.
Types of devices
Today, you can find on sale not only single-connector, but also multi-connector models. The process of connecting a double telephone socket does not differ significantly from installing a single one. There are many types of connectors, but the most common are the following:

RJ 11 - used to connect to the line telephone network using two conductors. - RJ 14 - has 4 contacts.
- RJ 25 - since it contains 6 contacts at once, the process of connecting it is rather complicated and it is better to contact a specialist.

- RTShK 4 is an old-style socket used in Soviet times.
In homes, the most popular is the RJ 11 telephone socket. In office premises, RJ 14 and RJ 25 are often used.
Installation methods
Connecting a telephone socket is much easier compared to its electrical counterpart. However, you will have to be careful and careful during installation. First you need to decide on the type of installation:
- Open - installation is carried out in an overhead way.
- Closed - the wires are hidden in the wall.
When choosing a laying method, it is necessary to focus on the service conditions of the line, the structure of the walls, as well as the design of the room. If aesthetics are important, then an overhead outlet may not be the best choice. At the same time, it is easy to maintain, since its performance can be checked in a few seconds.
To protect open wiring from mechanical damage, special cable channels made of plastic are used. They are not only wall-mounted, but also floor-standing, outwardly resembling a plinth. The condition of the conductors in them can be monitored thanks to the snap-on panels. The selection of sockets built into the skirting board deserves a special mention. The best option would be devices, the front of which is in close contact with the baseboard.
If the installation of the socket is carried out in a hidden method, then it is recommended to use the KSVP cable. It has one copper core and its outer sheath is made of white polyethylene. You can also use the TRP cable.
Installation recommendations
The process of installing an outlet does not require serious knowledge in the field of electrical engineering. Since RJ 11 and RJ 12 connectors are most often used in apartments, the features of connecting devices should be considered by their example.
Preparatory stage
First, you need to carefully study the internal communication diagram that should be attached to the device. When connecting the RJ 11 (RJ 12) socket, it is only necessary to connect the conductors of the corresponding polarity. If you plan to connect an RJ 25 socket, then at home you only need to use pins 3 and 4. Sometimes it is planned to use an outdated telephone set and in such a situation you will have to buy a universal socket. You will also need a wire with a cross section of 0.3 to 0.5 mm.
If the wiring of the telephone cable is carried out with a hidden method, then it is necessary to first grind a channel for the conductor in the wall, and also cut a hole for mounting the socket. For this, a wall chaser and a perforator with a crown are used. However, the task can be solved with a hammer and chisel, but much more time will have to be spent.
Connecting wires
The telephone cable can be easily damaged, and care must be taken when stripping it. Even experienced craftsmen may not always be able to cut the cable the first time. Therefore, during the laying of the conductor, it is worth making some margin in length. The excess cable can then be hidden. To connect the socket, it is enough to strip about 4 cm of the wire.
After that, it is necessary to move the wires apart and connect them to the terminals of the box, focusing on the diagram located on the front side of the inner side. If the wiring was carried out in a hidden way, then for the convenience of connecting the wires should protrude 60-80 mm beyond the wall plane. To check the polarity of the conductors, it is worth using a tester. Otherwise, the telephone will malfunction.
It should be remembered that the voltage in a ready-to-use telephone line is 60 to 80 V. The connected cores of the cable must be attached to the clamp and tightened tightly with the help of special screws. With open wiring, at the final stage of connecting the outlet, it is enough just to close the cover and fix it on the wall. If the installation of the cable was carried out in a hidden way, then you need to make sure that there is no interlacing of conductors in the socket and install the indoor unit in the wall.
When it is given the desired position, it remains to fix the structure with self-tapping screws or spacer screws. At the final stage, you need to cover the socket and the channel with the conductors with a plaster solution. When the gypsum is sufficiently hard, the protective edging is installed and the faceplate is mounted.
