The nym electric cable appeared on the shelves of domestic stores relatively recently. It can be used for most electrical work and various tasks. Today, several Russian enterprises have mastered the process of producing wires of this standard. When choosing a cable, you need to know its technical and operational characteristics that correspond to European norms and understand the labeling.

Marking value
The nym wire abbreviation stands for:
- N - denotes compliance with the standards of the German Electrical Engineering Association.
- Y - the insulating layer is made of vinyl.
- M is a multifunctional wire and can be used in various fields.
In addition, the marking may contain the letters "O" and "J", denoting the presence of neutral and ground wires, respectively. They are colored yellow-green and blue. If the cable has a VDE abbreviation, then it can be used in fire-hazardous premises.
Main technical characteristics
At Russian enterprises producing num cable, most often used own specifications. The lack of a single standard negatively affects consumer feedback. If the conductor was manufactured outside the Russian Federation, then such problems do not arise. Thus, it makes sense to consider in detail only the cable number, the technical characteristics of which correspond to the German standard.
The conductors of the wire are made of copper and can be monolithic if their cross-section is within 1.5-10 mm2. Larger conductors have multiple strands. And you can also find wire num with two types of markings:
- NUM - J - consists of three conductors, one of which is yellow-green and intended for grounding.
- NUM - O - there is no ground wire.
All conductors in the cable are covered with PVC, and between them there is an intermediate layer of non-combustible sealant. External insulation is also made of vinyl. For ease of installation, all wires are painted in a specific color.
Here's a list of the rest of the specs:
- The maximum voltage is 0.66 kV at a current frequency of 50 Hz.
- Operation of the wire is possible in the temperature range of -50 - +50 degrees.
- The service life is at least 30 years.
- Installation work must be carried out at a temperature not lower than -5 degrees.
- The number of cores ranges from 2 to 5.
- The bending radius must be at least four outer diameters of the wire.
Please remember that a nym cable with VDE specifications can be used even with minor external damage. In turn, it is not advisable to use wires made in accordance with TU in such a situation. It should also be noted that conductor characteristics directly depend on its size.
Benefits of nym wire
Here are some of the reasons that made this explorer popular:
- The presence of an intermediate fire-resistant layer of chalk-filled rubber gives the wire a rather high flexibility, and it can be used for laying in hard-to-reach places.
- Before the cable appeared on the market, it passed a large number of tests and we can safely say about the high quality of its manufacture. However, this statement is true primarily for a wire produced abroad and complying with the VDE standard.
- The cable can be used in fire hazardous areas.
- The wire is not only resistant to fire, but also prevents its spread.
The products of domestic factories "Sevkabel", "Kamkabel" and "Pskovkabel" are at least not inferior to foreign counterparts in terms of conductive characteristics, but they can lose in quality protective coating - if this parameter is important, then it is better to choose a cable made in Germany, Turkey or France, despite the difference in price.
Application area
The cable can be used for various electrical work not only in everyday life, but also in industry. Very often it is used in wooden houses, due to the presence non-combustible intermediate layer. It is possible to lay the conductor in the open air, but only in places protected from direct sunlight.
Very often, the wire is used to create hidden wiring when connecting electric lighting devices and sockets. If laying is carried out in the ground, then it is recommended to first pass the cable through the corrugation. And also it should be remembered that the negative impact of the environment can negatively affect the characteristics of the conductor. If it is used indoors, it can withstand a current of 30 amperes, and in air this figure will already be a maximum of 24 amperes.
