Functionality and safety of a floor lamp
In comparison with other decorative elements, a floor lamp should be functional. Its purpose is to provide lighting that, in turn, will create comfort and mood. The lighting effects of this device can be in the form of a bright glow, mysterious twilight or a spot. What shouldn't be the case is light hiding due to the use of dense or opaque materials.
Close attention must be paid to safety. To eliminate the risk of fire, it is recommended to use energy saving or LED lamps and an E27 socket for a standard base. A high-quality and installed according to the rules of an electrician will help to avoid a short circuit. Therefore, the best option would be to choose a PVA cable 2 x 1.5 (if one lamp is installed). With several energy saving lamps and the presence of metal parts, a flexible three-core cable is required.
Project development and sequence of actions
Before starting production, the master needs to think about where the lamp will be located and what are its functions. This will help you decide on the design of the lampshade and the wattage of the lamps. Two more important issues are the conditions for operation and connection to the general electrical wiring of the house.
The manufacturing sequence of the device is as follows:
- Connect cable with plug and socket.
- Make a frame for the lampshade.
- Make a lampshade, apply the chosen decor.
- Assemble the entire structure.
The main requirement for a hand-made thing is its safety. To avoid a short circuit, all connections should be carefully insulated and hidden behind the details and decoration of the product.
Making a simple lamp
It is not too difficult to make such a structure, even a novice master will cope with this matter. For work, you will need the following materials and tools:
-
Adhesive (universal and for wood).
- 1 meter long wooden board.
- Cable, socket, plug (available pre-assembled from a hardware store).
- For the frame: a bar of wood with a diameter of about 4 centimeters and a length of 150 centimeters, a copper tube of the same size.
- Drill.
- Knife.
- Copper elbow.
- Fasteners.
- Lampshade paint.
- Plastic bucket or waste bin.

When everything is ready, you can start working. Stages of making the rack:
- Divide the board into two parts, and one of them should be two or three centimeters smaller than the other. The approximate dimensions of the base are 35/5/20 and 30/3/15 centimeters. If desired, the dimensions can be changed, as long as the base is stable.
- Glue one plank to the center with the other wood glue. Fix with clamps until completely dry.
- Measure about 5 centimeters from the edge, make a hole equal to the diameter of the acquired bar, grind.
The height of the stand is 150 centimeters, but the size can be chosen according to your taste. The next stage is the fabrication of the frame:
-
Make a hole in the rack for the copper tube. It will be tilted so the hole is drilled at an angle of about 60 degrees.
- Pass the tube through the hole so that it protrudes 30 centimeters.
- Mark the junction and drill a 6 mm hole there.
- Insert a block into the hole in the base, fix it with glue.
- Insert the copper tube into the hole, direct it to the floor, secure with universal glue.
- Attach the elbow to the tube, insert the cable into the hole made, which should protrude slightly from the elbow.
The base for the floor lamp is ready. Algorithm for making a lampshade:
- Cut off the side of the bucket or basket, make a hole in the bottom for the cartridge.
- Paint the basket in the desired color (it is better to use two coats of paint).
- Insert the socket into the lampshade, fasten it to the wire, screw in the bulb.
The work is done. Now you can enjoy reading books under your own hand-made lamp. If desired, the wooden stand and base can be varnished or painted in a beautiful color.
Lampshade finishes
The most difficult stage of the work is the manufacture and assembly of the rack. The lampshade decor is the nicest part. Here you can show your imagination and creativity. In addition, now the choice of materials for decoration is huge.
Use of fabric
You can take any fabric for the lampshade - and delicate organza, and rough denim, and beautiful colored silk. It is very convenient if you already have a ready-made lampshade from an old lamp. It is enough just to remove the faded fabric from it and tighten the frame again, securing the fabric with a glue gun. You can glue the lampshade in a whole piece or create a collage of patches of different colors and textures. Flowers and butterflies from pieces of fabric that are sewn or glued to a covered metal frame look great.
Old sweater cover
An original lampshade can be made if there are unused balls of yarn or an old sweater in the house. It is necessary to tie the frame of the night lamp or sew a colorful cover from a woolen sweater. It is worth putting a basket of yarn next to it or sticking knitting needles into the lampshade with started knitting - and the atmosphere in the room will become warm and homely cozy. For the same purpose, lace, macrame, a knitted scarf or shawl are used.

Decoupage update
Decoupage is always beautiful, stylish and original. To update the lampshade with decoupage, it is enough to purchase napkins with the pattern you like, PVA glue, white paint and varnish. Sequence of work:
-
Prime the lampshade with matt white paint in two coats.
- Separate the top layer of the napkin, carefully cut the drawing.
- Glue the image to the surface of the lampshade. You need to act very carefully so as not to break the napkin. Paste the entire base in this way.
- Allow the product to dry completely.
- Cover the lampshade with acrylic varnish, leave to dry again.
If desired, the finished lampshade can be additionally decorated with sequins, beautiful colored feathers, rhinestones, beads, etc. It is convenient to attach the decor to the base with a glue gun.
