There are many options for budget repairs. One of them is painting wallpaper. Is it possible to do this with conventional materials and with what material? We will examine in detail this issue.
Bit of theory
Wallpaper intended for painting is characterized by low water absorption. Paper is another matter. They quickly get wet from any moisture. If such wallpaper was poorly glued, then the wet part will swell and move away from the wall. Therefore, experienced craftsmen highly recommend not painting ordinary wallpaper.

But, if all the wallpapers are glued qualitatively, then why not make a quick repair? You just need to make sure that all areas are well kept on the wall. As for the non-woven wallpaper, it is quite difficult to paint them, since the decorative surface simply absorbs all the applied paint. Therefore, they are pre-prepared before painting.

You can color ordinary wallpapers with any kind of paint, but you need to take into account their features:
- Water based paints are the cheapest. They are subject to moisture. They can be painted with paper only after processing their PVA. More suitable for vinyl;
- Oil paints are allowed to work only with paper wallpaper;
- Water-based acrylics are characterized by fast drying times and the absence of a pungent odor. Suitable for non-woven;
- Latex-based acrylics protect the wallpaper well from moisture and other influences. For best results, apply several coats.

The best option for painting ordinary wallpaper of any type is latex. It protects wallpapers and extends their lifespan. Allows after its application to wash the surface with any household chemical compounds.
From words to deeds
So that the wallpaper does not get wet and does not move away from the wall, painting should be done in several stages:
- Cleaning the surface of dust, gluing the departed areas from the wall. You should wash the wallpaper with a degreasing agent and wait for them to dry completely. If the wallpaper has not moved away from the wall, then they can be painted;
- Paper must be treated with PVA glue, and vinyl and non-woven should be putty in several layers. Wait at least a day for complete drying;
- Dilute the paint according to the instructions and apply evenly with a roller.

After the first layer has completely dried, if necessary, apply a second or paint varnish to fix the color and add gloss or dullness to the walls.
