A fiberboard, or, as it is also called, hardboard, belongs to the finishing and construction materials that are affordable and affordable for the average consumer. Most often, fiberboard is used where you need to level the surface or prepare it for decoration. Very often, manufacturers use sheets of this material as the back wall of furniture - cabinets, chests of drawers. Or make a bottom for furniture drawers. Pressed fiber sheets are widely used for the interior decoration of passenger train cars.
Fiberboard, among other things, is used to make beautiful wall panels that mimic natural materials - stone, wood, brick. With their help, you can "cheaply and angrily" align and at the same time decorate uneven walls.
It’s easy to work with fiberboard - even an unprepared person can handle it. Special care for them is not necessary, special conditions in the room are also not required. However, fiberboard has one significant drawback that can cross out all its advantages - under the influence of moisture, the material swells.
Reasons for bloating fiberboard sheets and what to do about it
The hardboard is not a waterproof material, and is highly susceptible to moisture, which, when ingested, softens wood fibers. The area of the sheet begins to increase, it swells and is covered with “waves”, often together with the floor covering - linoleum, parquet or laminate. By the way, sometimes the cause of fiberboard deformation may be the flooring itself, for example linoleum. If the base on which the fiberboard is laid is a little damp, then the sheet will let a small amount of moisture pass through without consequences. When linoleum is laid on top, moisture has nowhere to go, it accumulates inside the fiberboard sheet and leads to damage.
What to do in such a situation?
In fact, not much can be done. If the wall panels are distorted, then their replacement and the complete elimination of the moisture source are unambiguously required. If with the help of fiberboard the floor surface is leveled, then as a preventive measure it is recommended that the lower side (the one that will lie on the base) be treated with hot linseed oil.
It should be noted that if the fiberboard has already swollen, then it is impossible to completely eliminate the defect, since the internal structure of the material is violated. You can only partially align the sheet by screwing the swollen place with screws, or nail it with nails.
Sometimes a good result can be obtained by gluing swollen sheets to the surface. To do this, use PVA glue. Glue is filled into a syringe and pumped under a sheet, after which something heavy is placed on top for several days.
However, as practice shows, all these measures are ineffective - if there is moisture, then the sheet will swell repeatedly, and no glue and self-tapping screws will help here. Before mounting in a damp room, the fiberboard should be treated with linseed oil or varnish, and if the sheets are swollen, it is best to dismantle them and replace them with another, more resistant to moisture material.
