Interior door sills are an element of decorative decoration of the floor, which not only adds to its aesthetics, but also performs a functional role. The threshold protects the edges of the coating from bending or delamination, does not allow moisture and dirt to enter the joints of the floors. You can set thresholds yourself, without involving hired specialists.
There are various types of thresholds:
- Metal (bronze, steel, brass, aluminum);
- Wooden;
- Plastic
- Laminated
- Concrete
Regardless of the material from which they are made, all thresholds (stone concrete) are divided into two types according to the type of fastening: with an open and hidden fastener system.
Thresholds of the first type are mounted quite simply. Ready-made holes for screws have already been drilled in profiles. A threshold is applied to the floor, places for screws are marked, then a hole is drilled and the threshold is fixed. The main thing is not to make large holes so that the screws do not hang out and pop out. It is better to use screws with decorative hats: they are not so visible on the background of the floor.
Many owners prefer thresholds with a hidden fastening system. They consist of two parts: internal and external. For example, a bar with holes for screws or a rail acts as an internal one. There are no screws on the visible outside of the threshold.
Mounting such thresholds is a little more difficult, but, knowing some secrets, even a novice can cope with them. As in the first case, holes for plastic dowels are drilled in the floor according to the marking. Self-tapping screws must be carefully threaded for the caps into the holes on the bar. Then turn the bar so that the screws go into the dowels. The bar is slightly pressed down and with a light tapping of the hammer is fixed. It is better to beat through a layer of paper or cardboard so as not to spoil the front side of the plank.
The T-shaped threshold is mounted slightly differently. The dowels are also inserted into the holes prepared in the floor, then the inner strip is screwed to the floor with screws, and the upper decorative strip is snapped or glued on top.
After installing such thresholds, the screw caps will not spoil the aesthetic impression of the room. Another significant plus: for hats that accidentally climbed out of the threshold, you will not be able to catch your feet and injure yourself. Therefore, it is advisable to choose thresholds with a hidden fastening system for installation.
