It would seem that knocking down a layer of old plaster from a wall or ceiling - what could be easier? Breaking - not building. However, even in such a seemingly simple business there are some nuances, observing which you can significantly simplify and speed up the work.
Plaster, as a rule, consists of fine sifted sand, lime (sometimes gypsum) and cement. It happens that the plaster contains such a percentage of cement that in strength it is not much inferior to concrete.

To remove the plaster layer you will need the following tools:
- Respirator, gloves;
- Protective glasses;
- Hammer, construction pick;
- Chisel;
- Old spatula, which is not a pity to "ditch";
- Old ax;
- Hammer drill;
- Bulgarian;
- A bucket of water and a wide paint brush;
- Shovel, broom, trash bags.

Of course, all of the above tools are not always needed - in some cases, one hammer is enough.
In order for the plaster to easily lag behind the base, it must be thoroughly saturated with water. The surface will become softer, less dust will be produced during operation. The plaster in the course of work needs to be intensively moistened several times.

The solution begins to be removed from the top of the wall, gradually moving towards the floor. First, the whole wall is well tapped with a sledgehammer or a large hammer. Already at this stage of work, large layers of plaster may fall off, which are poorly supported on the base. Then, having knocked down a piece of the surface, with a chisel, hatchet or putty knife pry the next section and separate it from the wall.

If the plasters did not save on cement and the plaster does not want to give up, you will have to use a power tool. Using a grinder with a disc for stone or concrete, the plastered surface is cut into small fragments, after which they are knocked down with a puncher or manually.

After the cleaning of the main area is finished, it is also necessary to clean the joints and seams from the old solution to ensure good adhesion of the new coating to the substrate. It is advisable to expand the old seams a little - about 0.5 cm. The surface cleared of old plaster needs to be processed with a brush on metal. If the surface area is large, you can use a drill or grinder with a special nozzle.

The last stage of work is the cleaning of construction waste and dust. The dust is removed from the walls with a wet brush so that it does not interfere with the adhesion of the new plaster layer to the wall.
Removing old plaster is not the easiest job, having a number of subtleties, observing which can significantly facilitate and speed up the work process. We hope that our material will help you with this.
