Before starting any repair, you need to clearly understand why this or that work is needed. The process of plastering walls consists of several stages, each of which has its own meaning.

Unevenness

The walls are checked for verticality and remove irregularities with a layer of mortar.

Dirt removal

Dirt, dust and stains greatly reduce the degree of adhesion of the solution to the wall. Cleaning is carried out using diluted hydrochloric acid or fatty clay. Then the dirt and mortar are removed with a hard metal brush.

At this stage, if the masonry is brick, the seams are embroidered. Recesses are made up to 1 cm, so that voids are formed between the bricks. But this is possible only in the case of porous bricks. On a smooth brick you need to apply notches. That is, in the brick with a chisel, small potholes are made.

When to notch

If the wall is made of cinder block or shell rock, then notches are not needed, since their surface is rough. And for a smooth wall of foam concrete or aerated concrete, notches are mandatory. They can be cut down with an ax or punch. Typically, such incisions should be 5-10 cm in length and up to half a centimeter in depth.

The notches are made so that the plaster is better connected with the wall and held firmly to it. Before plastering, the wall is moistened with water.

With wooden walls, everything is different. The wood is smooth and the stucco sticks to it poorly. Therefore, such surfaces are covered either with reinforcing mesh or with thin wooden slats (shingles).

Notches must be applied to the wall if it is concrete or stone, and plastering is carried out without the use of reinforcing mesh. In the case when plastering is carried out using a grid, notches are not needed. The solution will adhere to the grid fixed to the wall using self-tapping screws.
