Finishing the facade of the house, walkways or floor made of natural stone look very nice. An even greater aesthetic effect can be achieved by making the stone “wet” with a special varnish. Thus, additional stone protection will also be obtained from the adverse effects of the external environment. Lacquered stone will last longer.
Types of varnish for stone
To coat the stone to achieve a "wet" effect, you can use acrylic varnish or varnish with solvents. A high-quality varnish should have excellent water-repellent abilities, resistance to temperature fluctuations, ultraviolet radiation and mechanical stress.
Acrylic varnish is more suitable for indoor use, and solvent varnish - outdoors. At the same time, it is worth remembering that the acrylic mixture with solvents, although it is most effective, is toxic. To work with such a varnish you need gloves and a respirator.
The advantages of varnish with a "wet" effect are:
- It can be used for indoor and outdoor use;
- Protects a stone from moisture, weather conditions, chemical reagents, physical impact;
- Gives shine, brightness, creates a silky effect;
- It adheres well to the stone;
- Increases the service life of the finishing material.
You can buy ready-made varnish at a hardware store. Before applying it is thoroughly mixed, and thick diluted with a solvent in a ratio of not more than 1:10.
Stone coating process
The surface of the stone must be washed in advance, remove dirt and dust, and then dry well. It is worth checking how firmly the stone is held. It should be tightly packed and not staggered.
The varnish is applied to the stone with a paint brush of the appropriate size. A foam roll is also suitable. Smooth stone is varnished once. On a rough stone should be applied two, and preferably three layers of varnish, allowing each layer to completely dry.
After varnishing, the stone coating will shine as if it had just been raining. In order not to disturb the structure of the varnish, metal brushes and hard abrasive products cannot be used to clean the stone.
