Wooden carport: pros and cons

Everyone who has a car, but does not have a garage, sooner or later think about building a canopy for him in the yard or in the country. A protective structure can save the car owner from such natural phenomena as rain or, even worse, hail. If the car is on the street in winter, then you do not have to dig it out of the snowdrift in the morning.

Such a canopy can be built from various materials, but most often it is welded from metal. True, there are those who consider the option of a wooden canopy acceptable. It seems to make it easier and cheaper in price. In addition, a canopy made of natural wood will look beautiful on the site.

Arguments in favor of a wooden canopy: the ability to build on their own and work without a complex tool. If after a large construction site there are many bars and boards left, you can also use them in the case, and, therefore, save on the purchase of materials.

Why a wooden canopy is bad

However, experts do not advise making a wooden canopy for the car. And there are several good reasons for this.

• It is difficult to find a normal dry tree for sale. When it dries after the purchase, it can unpredictably bend. The boards will simply lead, and it will not work to connect them beautifully;
• The tree will have to be very carefully treated from termites, bark beetles, other pests, impregnated with compounds from fungus, fire, moisture, then well painted in several layers;
• At a price, wood will come out no cheaper than metal. Strong varieties are even more expensive. So the savings will not work;
• The wooden structure will be massive and bulky. The roof of the boards is very heavy. Racks of supports will need to withstand not the weight of snow, but the roof itself. Incorrectly selected racks and incorrect load calculation - and the roof will fold onto the car;
• Wooden parts will have to be varnished or painted every year. And still the tree will quickly lose its original appearance. It is susceptible to getting wet in winter and autumn, and in summer it is dry from intense heat. The boards will warp and crack;
• Also, there is always a danger of fire of a wooden structure. When a car is under a canopy, the risk of fire spreading to it is very high.

Given these good reasons, it is better to abandon the construction of a wooden canopy. He will not be able to last as long as a metal one, and he can add much more worries.
