Design loft in the interior: history and features

Open spaces, high ceilings, panoramic windows, lots of light and air. Freedom and independence, a special urban chic and charm - these are the hallmarks of the loft style.

The history of origin and special features of the loft

/

Loft is a relatively young direction in design. This style originated in the middle of the last century, in the fifties in New York. Land prices skyrocketed and industrialists could not afford to pay rent, so the owners of the production began to move their factories and production shops outside the city. A large number of rooms with a huge area were empty. Owners had to sell the premises of former factories and plants for a penny.

The new owners found application for these premises - they began to lease them out in the form of residential premises to poor citizens.

The new type of housing did not have partitions and walls, the floors were made of concrete, there was practically no heating. Over time, residents began to equip the premises with fireplaces from metal barrels, open stoves. Quickly furnished housing, with equipped kitchen and bathroom, bare walls and open wiring, began to attract the attention of New York bohemia.

In these premises art exhibitions and galleries opened. Ordinary, unpretentious housing over time has turned into an elite and expensive.

The loft style gained its popularity and firmly consolidated its position among creative, free and independent people.

Directions of style and rules of design

/

The basic principles of loft-style housing are open-plan, free of walls and partitions. Only a bathroom can be isolated. Windows are preferable to panoramic and attic views, drapery curtains, blinds are completely excluded. The walls also remain open, free of wallpaper and plastic. Masonry or concrete wall should be visible. Cold concrete floors are not entirely acceptable for living quarters, so most often they are covered with a wooden coating. The ceilings are necessarily high, with open wiring and beams, group lighting. A fireplace is an integral part of the interior. Due to the high height of the premises, it is possible to equip a second tier, under the study or bedroom. The color scheme consists strictly of two or three shades, in harmony or contrast. Particular attention should be paid to furniture and appliances. The interior may contain either strictly ultramodern furniture, or furniture, in the literal sense, from the last century, with a touch of time.

There are only three directions in the loft - glamorous, boho and industrial.
Glamorous loft - has a combination of unconventional pastel colors. Particular attention is paid to light and lighting fixtures, which are the main emphasis in the interior.

/

Boho Loft - a distinctive feature of this direction are pristine wall decoration, a variety of furniture (but strictly corresponding to the time style), the presence of a large number of copyright paintings, art objects and sculptures.

/

Industrial - furniture of strict forms, open wiring, pipe structures, everything that reminds of a production room.

Loft style will appeal to people who are creative and original, who do not tolerate borders and borders!
