How not to hang a shelf on drywall

Drywall is a popular material that is used to level walls in apartments and houses. Sometimes it just needs to be hung on a shelf, heavy or light. How to do it right, but which is better not worth it?

How to hang a shelf

Drywall is a very fragile and soft material, so before you create a certain load on its surface, you need to carefully consider your actions. Since the sheets do not perceive the point load well, it is impossible to hang a shelf nailed on a nail or simply screwed onto self-tapping screws. They will create excessive stress on a small area of ​​gypsum plaster, which will entail pulling out the fasteners together with a piece of gypsum.

Do not weigh too heavy shelves without first fixing reinforcing mortgages or without special fasteners. On a single-layer drywall, it is better not to place objects that in general will weigh more than 25 kg. Two-layer drywall should not be subjected to loads exceeding 35 kg.

How to hang a light shelf

You can install a small shelf weighing up to 6 kg using special dowels. They are sold under the names of dowel-butterfly or dowel-umbrella. The latter can withstand more solid loads (up to 15 kg).

The mechanism of action of such dowels is that when the fasteners are screwed into the GCR, its base begins to straighten, forming reliable stops on the surface. It is they who take most of the load on the subject. The screw should be slightly longer than the dowel, then the structure will be securely fixed to the wall.

Installation of heavy shelves

If special dowels do not cope with the loads exerted by heavier shelves, and drywall begins to crumble, then you need to use a different tactic. It is necessary to make a metal profile on a sheet of drywall and use special fasteners.

The profile must be mounted behind the drywall wall, so its installation must be taken care of in advance. Then, a hole is drilled through the GCR and the profile, butterfly dowels are inserted into it. In the latter, screws with fastening are screwed. Do not over tighten the fasteners.
