A giant berry with a sweet taste is a favorite summer treat, but those who are in a hurry to taste the juicy pulp faster are at risk of serious poisoning. To minimize the chances of acquiring a watermelon grown with nitrate fertilizers that are harmful to the human body, it is recommended to buy only dark green fruits with lighter stripes exclusively from the second half of August, even better - at the beginning September

Large watermelons, which can be seen on sale since the end of June, are most likely brought from other countries. A delicate product may deteriorate during prolonged transport. As a rule, watermelons do not pack individually, but simply load into the trucks, as a result of which the berries crack, rot, and bacteria are brought into the pulp, leading to poisoning. Watermelons appearing on the market at the end of summer are usually more juicy, wholesome and safer.
When choosing a watermelon, it is recommended to pay attention to some signs of its freshness in order to protect the health of your family:
- The peduncle should not be dry and break off easily. A ponytail can only be slightly dried out.
- Naturally grown fruits always have a yellowish spot on their sides. It remains in place, which was in contact with the surface of the earth during growth. Such a watermelon can and should be eaten.
- When buying a watermelon, do not let sellers cut it to demonstrate its freshness. You should not try already cut watermelon at the counter, because it is not known exactly when it was cut. In general, it is necessary to cut a watermelon immediately before use, and the remaining berries should be stored in the refrigerator, covered with cling film.
- The watermelon skin should not be bulletproof, it can be easily scratched. At the same time, but the surface should not be dented, chipped, cracked or rotted. Stale or poor-quality watermelons are often covered with a light white coating, so it is dangerous to get a watermelon in a hurry and not looking closely. It’s better to stay a couple of minutes than risk the health of loved ones.
- Ripe watermelon easily crackes when cut. If the flesh gives off acidity or has a strange smell, it is better not to eat it.
Most buyers often ask the seller to choose a ripe watermelon for them. It is better to rely on your own feelings and intuition, because many unscrupulous sellers are trying to deceive customers, slipping them stale goods, and the phrase "for me for a child" - also does not guarantee security. Choosing a ripe watermelon is not at all difficult, and with the help of simple tricks you can become a real "watermelon expert."
