Stretch ceilings are in almost every apartment, since they are practical in maintenance, are not expensive, have an attractive appearance. And many are afraid to lose all this, opening champagne. It’s no secret to anyone how hard the cork from this sparkling drink can shoot, so the experience is fully justified. But is it really possible to break through the ceiling with a cork?

Many are afraid to open champagne in rooms where stretch ceilings are made because of the fear that the cork will fly off directly into the PVC film. In theory, if the cork broke through the canvas in one place, then its further operation would become meaningless, since at first a small ragged hole will begin to increase more and more over time. That is, it can really bring big troubles.

In fact, a cork from champagne is not able to break through the ceiling if the film was properly stretched. Due to its elastic properties, the PVC coating will simply spring when meeting with a reactive object.
Special studies were conducted in which corks of chilled and warm champagne and stretch ceilings were involved. The results were the following information - chilled champagne, which was shaken, can start a cork in the ceiling at a speed of 50 km \ h, and a warm drink under the same conditions gives numbers of about 100 km \ h And even such speeds are not able to damage the ceiling.

But here there are complicated cases. For example, the probability of an outcome depends on where the cork got into. Under the ceiling, usually around the perimeter, there are metal profiles and all kinds of communications that have sharp corners. If an object flying at such a speed falls exactly there, then the canvas will tear about the tip of the fasteners.
Also, during flight, a cork can break a ceiling or a chandelier, and already its sharp fragments can damage the canvas of the PVC film.
If the ceiling does not have elasticity (we are talking about fabric webs), then the probability of rupture from the cork increases. The lower the tensile properties, the greater the chance of damage.

Thus, it turns out that there is no single answer, everything will depend on the given conditions and good luck. But in order not to tempt fate, you can open champagne in a safer place.
