A common way to make holes under pillars is to use a garden drill. It is easy for them to make indentations up to three meters, but there are some nuances in its use. Is it possible to replace it with something more effective?

Hand Drill Features
There are two varieties of hand drill: disk and auger. Its effectiveness and productivity depends on the device and the quality of the drill. It is important to choose the right option in the store, because the design can both facilitate the work and complicate it.
The disk auger crushes the earth, and the auger cuts the soil in layers. The second has more advantages:
- The tool can be lengthened, which is used for drilling small wells;
- Thanks to its spiral design, the screw auger is able to easily overcome obstacles in the soil in the form of stones and solid soils;
- It is necessary to apply less effort to the screw drill than to the disk one;
- Drilling one meter will take about 10 minutes with medium density soil.

But a screw drill has a peculiarity, because of which its effectiveness in some situations is reduced. Usually on the shelves are sold drills with not sharpened blades. In this case, the drill can only be used on sandy or chernozem soils. But this problem is solved by self-sharpening with a grinder or file.
To work on clay soils during drilling, it is necessary to take breaks and soak the soil with a bucket of water. The procedure is performed in the event of a drill stop and lack of productive movement.

Alternatives to pit burru
In fact, there are no more effective alternatives to the drill for pits, only if we consider automated options, for example, motor drills. But the price of such units is much higher, and productivity for gardening increases slightly.
The only alternative under these conditions is a shovel. It has two advantages: it is lighter than a drill (about 5 kg) and it copes more effectively in some areas of the soil. For example, when working with tree roots or strong rocky soil. It should be understood that such a tool cannot be made into a long and narrow hole, therefore it can only be used in tandem with a drill.

But at the same time, the shovel can perfectly cope with digging holes under square posts. The recesses can be made large enough and neat, but much more time will be spent on this.
