By design, the table, in appearance, is even simpler than a chair. Usually four legs below and a countertop on top. But this simplicity is only apparent. No wonder they say that "everything ingenious is simple." Between the two parts of the table, leg support and countertop, there is such a “tricky thing” as a dining box. This is the frame to which they are attached, and reliable enough so that the legs themselves do not part. The countertop also rests on it. The box must be solid and, more importantly, stiff enough. Now almost all dining tables have the ability to be laid out.

There are several options for such transformations. Here are just two of the main ones:

• Extendable table. An insert element is placed in the dining box. When pushing the two halves of the split tabletop along the rails to the sides, it is inserted or removed and hinged to a common level with the main tabletop. And then connects to it through small, cylindrical, centering spikes;
• Swing table. When assembled, it is quite short. Its working width when assembled is almost three times its length. On the sides, on both sides, there are hinged wings. If necessary, the table is installed in the center of the room, oar "wings" rise flush with main tabletops, are supported and fixed in horizontal position by swinging supports with with pins. One or two on each side. At the bottom of the supporting frame there is a horizontal shelf on which to store various things. In normal times, such a table-cabinet is installed against the wall and does not take up much space.

The legs of dining tables, as a rule, are made from solid joinery blanks of square section. In stationary dining tables, they are interconnected by longitudinal and transverse bars - tsars. The rigidity of such tables is very high.

Large dining tables with a fairly long sliding table top may also have a fifth, most often removable, leg. It is installed when sliding the countertops to give greater stability and maintain the center of the countertop. Or maybe three or four pairs of legs. But these are already monster tables. They can be found in large dining rooms. They are designed for the constant reception of a large number of guests and eaters.

Standard tables designed for living rooms that hold the king do not have. The stability of such tables is provided due to the somewhat inclined arrangement of the legs from the vertical and screw, quick-detachable fastening them with screws with thumb to the dining box. By the way, not everyone knows, and even fewer owners of such tables use this. These tables quickly disassemble into a convenient option for storage. The size of a folded countertop and just the height of a dining box in which all four legs are stacked compactly with screws. Such a “doubled” folded table is placed under an ordinary sofa and does not take up space in the room at all.

Dining table tops can be square, rectangular, round or oval. It should be remembered that placing a table in a room for receiving guests and organizing a festive feast, it is necessary to provide each guest with sufficient space at the table for a comfortable fit and easy communication with present. It is believed that the width of such a space should be 60 cm for one person sitting in an ordinary chair, and not less than 70 cm when guests are seated on chairs with armrests or in semi-chairs. In depth, from the edge of the countertop, a space of 35-40 cm should be provided for everyone sitting at the table.

The free space around the table, for a convenient approach and landing at the table, should be 80 cm. The height of standard tables ranges from 70 to 78 cm.

Front tables for receptions have a slightly higher height. Worktops are made from solid or typeset glued solid wood.
