How to make a DIY aquarium heater

In this section, we will talk about the oldest means of heating a glass bulb - a reflector. It is not so difficult to manufacture, so it can be made at home from improvised means. To do this, take a tin half-cylinder, fix the cartridge with an incandescent lamp at the end. It should turn out so that the lamp is inside the reflector.

Then we hang the device to the edge of the aquarium in such a way that the upper part of the reflector is under the water level. So the glass will warm up evenly and will not burst from temperature changes. The method is still good today, especially for tanks up to 30 liters.

For this we do not need a tin reflector. Simply immerse the incandescent lamp in a container of water. We fasten the cartridge on the lid in such a way that it does not come into contact with the liquid, but only the glass flask is placed in water. The method has more advantages than the previous one, since nothing needs to be crafted. But one small drawback - over time, your light bulb will become overgrown with algae, and it will need to be cleaned.

Critical option when nothing is at hand

If, God forbid, the temperature drops by more than 10 degrees, then ordinary vodka will help to quickly stabilize the situation. For this:

  1. pour some liquid into the tank (ratio 3:10, for 3 ml of vodka 10 liters of aquarium water);
  2. after the procedure, install a carbon filter until your pets stabilize;
  3. then change a third of the fluid in the tank.

There is probably no better way than buying a ready-made special heater in the store. It looks like a long tube containing an electron spiral. The inside is also filled with quartz sand. The coil outlets are at the top and are carefully sealed. By 220 volts, the device is powered by a wire.

The power of the heating element is different. Choose for yourself such that the upper area of the test tube with all contacts is at least 2 cm in height from the waterline. In this case, the lower part should not touch the bottom. Power can be calculated by eye: 30 watts is suitable for a 30-liter tank.

To fix the system inside the aquarium, use rubber suction cups or plastic rings with fasteners. For simplicity, if you did not find any accessories, install the test tube with a simple wire. Only it needs to be fixed at the top of the tank, and not in the water itself.

Heating an aquarium cannot do without a high-quality thermostat. They should be sold where you found the bulb with the lamp. Temperature control will be much easier if a special thermometer is at hand.

It also does not hurt to buy a filter system so that warm water circulates evenly over the entire plane of the aquarium. You can try to put a small compressor - also a very good solution.
