Once I heard, now I do not remember where or from whom, about gymnosperm pumpkin. I really wanted to see firsthand, do sunflowers have no peel? But only about five years ago I saw seeds on sale, although this variety was taken out a long time ago - at the beginning of the last century. I was looking forward to the first harvest. But the planting of seeds in the open ground was a failure. This then I learned that there are some features of growing gymnosperm pumpkin.

Pumpkin Cultivation Features

In the technology of growing gymnosperm pumpkin has some features.

Firstly, bare seeds when planted in very moist soil, with subsequent rainy weather can rot, without having had time to germinate. In the first year, it happened to me. Usually, pumpkin seedlings appear about 5-7 days after sowing, sometimes under favorable conditions earlier. I waited two weeks - shoots did not appear, although the usual pumpkin had already risen by this time. I have only three seeds left, and I, not to risk, sowed them not in the open ground, but in glasses with soil. Seeds poured out of the earth on the 4th day.

I think that with such features, growing gymnosperm pumpkin seedlings - the best option. By the way, this method of growing - through seedlings, is recommended by seed producers. Since then, I plant the gymnosperm pumpkin in the open ground only with seedlings. For my family 4-5 plants are enough and this is not burdensome. Each plant will give 4-5 fairly large fruits (5-7 kg, sometimes more), which are well preserved.

Like any pumpkin, gymnosperm loves an open sunny place. In the shade, shading, the fruits grow small, the seeds are not enough.

Gymnosperm pumpkin, in contrast to their brethren, does not tolerate a drought. Even a short heat (and we always have a long heat) affects the harvest. Especially demanding is it to moisture in the period of fruit setting. It is worthwhile once or twice not to pour it - the fruits grow some clumsy, twisted, unsightly, small. The rest is the same as the usual pumpkin.

Keeping the gymnosperm pumpkin

In the storage of gymnosperm pumpkin has its own characteristics. Fruits can lie long in the apartment. But, it is advisable to consume them in food not later than two months after collection, as the seeds start to germinate inside.

Looking ahead, I can say that we did not like this pumpkin at all. But seeds are another matter. To click them, if one can say so about a seed without a shell, is a pleasure. Tried to fry in a pan, dried in the oven, but most of all I liked the seeds, dried in the sun, in the open air. Vobschem something I now grow it only to get the seeds for food. The usual pumpkin seeds in a dense shell, and in the gymnosperm they are covered only with a thin film. You can eat them for nothing, without cleaning - the film is not felt, it is easily removed, it is only necessary to rub the grain with your fingers, do not interfere with the taste of pumpkin seeds.

How to grow a gymnosperm pumpkin on seeds

Another feature. If you want to collect your seeds for the future harvest, then put the gymnosperm pumpkin away not only from other varieties of pumpkin, but also from zucchini, patissons, as it is easily perepylyaetsya and planting seemingly bare seeds, you risk getting the next crop with ordinary seeds or even incomprehensible hybrid. With other varieties of pumpkin this does not happen, at least on the following generations it is not very noticeable.

The first years I tried to protect gymnosperm pumpkin from dusting. I will describe my experience, maybe someone will come in handy.

To get a clean seed, before pollination I isolated male and female flowers. To isolate the female flowers, I tightened the corolla with a soft rubber band or wrapped with a bandage so that the insects did not penetrate the stigma. Buds of male flowers collected the night before in a glass jar, covered with a lid, left to spend the night under a bush. At the time of pollination, female flowers released, and then again covered them from bees or other insects. There was no overexposure. But for fidelity I recommend the same female flower to pollinate some times. By the way, I tried this method of pollination: do not wait for the opening of the female flower, and open the bud, which is about to dissolve, to apply pollen from the male flower to the pestle.

But then I stopped doing it. Still, it is difficult to find time for such a "jewelery" business. After all, at any time you can buy clean-seed seeds. The usual sachet with seeds suffices me for 2 years, although the seeds there are usually 5-7 pieces.

Grades of gymnosperm pumpkin

I started with a brand that was called Golosemennaya. This pumpkin is medium-spinning. Fruits are cylindrical, but not very long, with blunt ends. The pulp is bright orange, but, as I said above, my family did not like the taste - not very sweet, watery, when extinguished or boiled it dissipates in mashed potatoes, that is, it does not keep the shape. In addition, the seed chamber is large, and the flesh is thin. The conclusion is that there is a lot of seeds, so this is the most important thing in this variety, for them it is worth growing.

Moreover, there are a lot of benefits from pumpkin seed. In their composition 50% of fatty oils, a large percentage of B vitamins, 30% protein, ascorbic acid. Pumpkin seeds are the best source of zinc for our body. In fatty oils there are glycerides of stearic, palmitic, oxycerotinic, oleic acids. Raw (not fried) pumpkin seeds have anthelmintic properties. They say that if you eat daily a handful of pumpkin seeds (of any sort) in the morning on an empty stomach, then in a week your body will get rid of worms and the like. And if you use them the same amount for 2-3 months once a year, then men can prevent such an unpleasant disease as prostatitis.

About two years ago I saw new (for me) varieties of gymnosperm pumpkin - Olga and Zebra. First I grew up seedlings, remembering the first unsuccessful experience. Very good grades. Almost the complete opposite of the Golosemennaya variety to taste and appearance. Fruits are very beautiful colors with green, bright orange or yellow stripes, oval shape. The flesh is thicker, fleshy, yellow, much sweeter than ordinary pumpkins, but still loses to taste, although the pancakes are delicious. The thickness of the pulp is from 4 to 8 cm. The Zebra variety has white seeds, and Olga has greenish, olive-tinged seeds. It seemed to me that the number of seeds Golosemennaya still more productive, perhaps due to the fact that the fruit is larger or seminal camera is larger. Although they are quite difficult to compare. In new varieties, the whole fruit goes into action. Alas, I managed once to buy these seeds, they did not come across me any more, but did not collect their own.

Experience has shown that pumpkins gymnosperms are not worth storing for longer than 2 months. With a longer shelf life, the seeds inside begin to germinate, they become unsuitable for eating or collecting seeds.
