In the first days after birth, the calf has weak immunity and an underdeveloped stomach. Therefore, it is extremely sensitive to diseases of any type, especially intestinal, for example, dyspepsia of calves. Most often this disease affects animals due to improper feeding and poor care.

What is indigestion and what are the causes of dyspepsia?

Dyspepsia is a digestive disorder, in another way is called enzymatic diarrhea. It is usually affected by newborn calves with an age of up to 10 days, especially during the period of colostrum feeding. First of all, dyspepsia of calves with severely weakened immunity is affected, and more healthy animals become infected. Because of this, massive loss of livestock is possible. The disease can occur in any season of the year, but more often in the spring or at the end of winter.

If you do not take urgent measures to treat a sick animal, then a lethal outcome due to dehydration of the body is inevitable.

The main symptoms of dyspepsia are diarrhea in the calf, lethargy.

Causes of occurrence:

  • poor-quality colostrum - during feeding the cow did not receive enough nutrients or was fed it with a mediocre food;
  • incorrect conditions of detention: a small cage with a large number of calves, slush, drafts, dampness, cold;
  • dirty containers for feed;
  • absence of walking;
  • overfeeding;
  • late launch of the cow;
  • cold or spoiled colostrum.

Due to the poor quality of milk, the symptoms of the disease are manifested as early as 2 hours after the first feeding. As a result, the body is drastically dehydrated and all metabolic processes slow down, which negatively affects the growth and development of the calf. Dyspepsia of calves can take place in two forms - light and heavy. The first symptoms are characterized by the following symptoms: weak appetite, lethargy and decreased interest in everything around, liquid stool (approximately 2 times a day). If you start treating the animal in time at this stage, then a full recovery will come.

The heavy form looks somewhat different: the calves have no appetite, the body temperature rises, and the skin becomes cold. The liquid stool is out often, the pulse is rapid. If you do not take urgent measures, animals die because of excess toxins (the products of vital activity of pathogens) and dehydration of the body within 2-5 days.

Treatment

Before you start to do something, if the calf suffers, it is necessary to separate it from other calves, for example, by moving it to a separate cage.

To treat dyspepsia, you need to apply a set of measures:

  • regular and regular feeding;
  • support of water and vitamin balance in the body;
  • prevention of all the processes of fermentation in the intestine.

Treatment depends on the severity. If a simple form, then the causes of dyspepsia, for example, poor-quality food and improper feeding of the cow giving colostrum, are revealed. In this case, all sick animals are separated into clean cells and do not feed for 6-12 hours. It is given only from teaspoonful drinkers warm saline or 1% salt solution. On the first day, 1 or 2 times, the colostrum is replaced with 1% salt solution.

For the treatment of diarrhea in the form of calves in the home, various infusions have proved to be excellent. For 1 kg of leaves of plantain or chamomile, take 10 liters of boiled water. They are soldered before feeding with colostrum 100-150 ml 2-3 times a day for two or three days. To normalize the work of the stomach for 5-7 days fed gastric juice, diluted with 50% boiled water, 30-50 ml. In addition, acidophilus-bouillon cultures are given, according to the doses specified in the instructions.

After a hungry diet colostrum fed in small portions (25% of the total volume), but often - 5-6 times a day. Within 4 days, the portion is brought to normal.

If the form of the disease has passed into a severe one, then a large number of different medications administered through the food will be needed for treatment (levomitsetin, shintomitsin and many others), intramuscularly (hydrolysin L-130, noglobulins) and intravenously (solution Ringer-Locke). Therefore, in this case, you should seek the help of a veterinarian, since you will need constant monitoring of a specialist.

To avoid cattle dyspepsia and other intestinal infections or parasites, it is necessary only to keep clean, give a full feed and on time to inspect.

Colibacteriosis and salmonellosis

The cause of diarrhea can be colibacillosis of calves. This dangerous infection affects animals with age from 3 to 8 days. It arises because of poor quality food, lack of vitamins and improper care. It is transmitted most often through colostrum. For treatment, antibiotics, drugs, neutralizing toxins, hyperimmune serum will be needed. From folk remedies use infusions of chamomile, oak bark or St. John's wort.

Salmonella calves are a dangerous infection, without timely treatment of which, cattle die within 5-10 days. In this case, diarrhea also appears. If the form of the disease is mild, and the animal is strong, then in time all the symptoms pass, and the calf recovers. Heavy type affects the respiratory tract, resulting in pneumonia, which can lead to death.

To avoid the occurrence of colibacillosis and salmonellosis, it is necessary to vaccinate livestock. But first it is necessary to conduct an examination to identify the sick individuals, since vaccines can only be given to healthy ones.
