Most often, OSB boards are used for rough construction work. For finishing and finishing, such material is used extremely rarely. This is due to the widespread belief that OSB is harmful to human health. Consider how much such a statement is justified.
OSB stands for Oriented Chipboard. It is presented in the form of sheets, the basis for which is thinly planed wood chips. Often the chip thickness does not exceed 4 mm and a length of 25 cm. A variety of additives and thermosetting synthetic resin occupy 10% of the total composition.
Of the predominant qualities of OSB boards, we can distinguish:
- High level of strength, allowing the material to withstand heavy loads.
- Resistance to deformation and light weight. Plates can easily veneer even radius structures.
- Inherent to a tree is good heat and noise insulation.
- Easy to install and additional processing. Plates are perfectly sawn, and their fastening is carried out using ordinary nails.
- Resistance to damage. The material easily tolerates scratches and other mechanical damage.
- Low percentage of deformation due to moisture or temperature changes.
Of the shortcomings of the OSB plates can be identified:
- Direct and prolonged exposure to water will swell the material.
- Replacing the insulation or laying communications under the stove can cause certain difficulties.
- The material has a high level of combustibility, which means it belongs to the class of fire hazardous.
- It does not tolerate biological effects, which is the cause of fungi, mold, insects and even rodents.
- OSB has a fairly high cost.
- Bad environmental friendliness. The use of synthetic resin in the manufacturing process of the stove is the cause of phenolic, methanol and formaldehyde fumes.
The polymer compounds used in the production of OSB boards allow not only to reduce the cost of production, but also to give the material high strength.
Unfortunately, phenol-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resins can have a negative effect on humans.
When purchasing OSB boards, to understand the level of toxicity, you should pay attention to smell, the presence of a certificate, factory labeling or packaging. As a rule, large manufacturers try to produce safer products.
