The principle of operation of halogen lamps

Home energy-saving lamps such as Camelion or Osram by the principle of operation are very similar to similar incandescent models. An ordinary bulb consists of a rather large bulb, most often of transparent or frosted glass. Inside this container is a gas mixture, in most cases it is argon or nitrogen (sometimes they are together). Directly in the center is a thin tungsten filament. An electric current passing through it heats the thread to 2500 degrees Celsius, after which it begins to emit a glow. Tungsten, like any other “white” metal, glows white when heated, and the color of the bulb alone decides whether the lighting will be warm or cold.

On average, an ordinary incandescent lamp can operate up to 1000 electro-hours with a normal consumption of 12 per day. The question is, why then does it take so much electricity to work? Basically, energy consumption is not spent on light, but on heat, which such a lamp gives almost twice as much as light. Because a lamp is needed to illuminate a certain room, and not to heat it, it turns out that most of the current simply passes into the void. Due to heat, the tungsten filament burns out and sometimes even explodes. This is the key difference between the halogen.

Metal halide lamps also use tungsten filament to operate, but only they are placed in a much smaller quartz flask. If you place a simple glass at such a small distance from the thread - it will begin to melt, but quartz increases its resistance to high temperatures. In addition, the gas in the halogen and in the incandescent lamp is very different. Specialists combine this substance with tungsten vapor, due to which gaseous halogen vapor is formed. When combined with tungsten vapors, they help extend the life of the thread, as completely evaporate, and do not settle on its surface.

Also, this gas mixture is necessary to lower the temperature of the filament; when using halogen, the filament gives off heat to space one and a half times less than during the use of argon or nitrogen. This saves the cost of electric current for its maintenance and payment of electricity bills.

Advantages and disadvantages of halogen lamps

Halogen lamps for cottages, home and office have their pros and cons. Consider them.

Positive traits:

1. For reading and other tasks requiring increased attention to the eye, bright light reduces eyestrain, does not strain the crystalline.

2. If you want to use a lighting system to attract the attention of customers or potential buyers, then white light is the best option for window dressing. Halogen spotlights allow you to adjust the spot focus. Many note that during their work, colors become more saturated and interesting, colors come to life.

3. Recessed halogen spotlights for outdoor work are rightfully considered the best illumination options in the yard. They, like LED ones, tolerate temperature extremes, external factors and precipitation (provided full sealing). In addition, they are at least 20% more economical than incandescent models. A distinctive feature is the extremely bright light that allows you to illuminate any corner of the open space.

But even such an ideal device has its own limitations:

  1. Few people like bright white light, it hits the eyes too much, moreover, it is not always appropriate. For example, halogen ceiling chandeliers are rarely used in a bedroom or a nursery, and if they are still there, then electrical engineers are working on a strategy for placing the lamp at an angle;
  2. Despite the fact that the outer shell of the lamp is very durable, it can be broken and then a very dangerous gas will come out. In small quantities, this is not harmful, but if you have more than one halogen, then migraines and dizziness can begin;
  3. It is not recommended to use halogen lamps for the bathroom - under the constant influence of moisture, they can easily explode;
  4. Cartridges, plinths and fragments of luminaires require a special disposal system. It doesn’t work out simply throwing it in a bucket, you will need to use the services of a specialized company, or a universal container for the disposal of chemical waste;
  5. The cost of halogen lamps is an order of magnitude higher than the price of incandescent lamps for the home. Of course, this drawback easily pays off with energy saving and durability.

Installation of halogen lamps

Consider how to install such a model; step-by-step instruction:

  1. Turn off the power in the apartment or directly on the lamp that you are replacing. Allow the floor lamp to cool;
  2. Remove the tempered glass cover over the halogen lamp. You may need to remove the clips or screws that hold the glass cover;
  3. Make sure that the marking on the purchased lamp is the same as the old one;
  4. Use a cotton cloth to remove the old lamp. In most cases, you need to slightly press the lamp and remove the cartridge.
  5. Without touching the new bulb, carefully insert it into the old one;
  6. Now it remains only to tighten the screws and glass cover and conduct a test for work.

The differences in the installation of such halogen lamps for the home is the reason for the presence of quartz deposition. If you touch it with your hands, then break the structure. The lamp will not work, or will explode during operation and may harm you with splinters and gas, so be careful.
