When laying a cold pipeline in modern realities, it is worth considering the mistakes of past years. It used to be that the best option for the pipe was galvanized steel, which was durable enough for that time. For about 30 years, such material worked flawlessly. Then, in the seventies, black steel was installed in most houses, which was considered more technologically advanced and was still relatively cheap. Experience has shown that the service life with this option has decreased by 2 times. In fact, 10 years after use, the first fistulas appeared. At the same time, pipe painting had the effect, as a rule, for the most part cosmetic and short-lived, because with intense condensation on the pipe surface quickly crumbled paint, and rust quickly was growing. From the inside, mineral deposits from water intakes were layered on the pipe, which, accordingly, narrowed the lumen of the pipe. Due to this, firstly, the pressure decreased, and secondly, the hydraulic resistance increased.
Given this sad experience, it is possible to determine the requirements that cold water pipes must meet.
The material must necessarily be durable, because a complete replacement of communications will lead not only to huge expenses, but also will take a lot of time. So that the pipes do not overgrow with mineral deposits, their inner surface must have minimal adhesion. Low thermal conductivity is highly desirable. If it is high, condensation will inevitably form on the pipe in the warm season. Oddly enough, it is better to purchase inexpensive pipes and fittings for them. If necessary, make a replacement at a particular site will not be difficult to acquire the necessary materials. Thus, of all the materials available for our time for cold water pipes, black steel is clearly unacceptable. Galvanized is quite suitable, copper pipes are also used. Most often, metal-plastic, polypropylene and polyethylene are still used. They differ not only in ease of installation, but decent reliability. When purchasing polypropylene pipes, you need to pay attention to the wall thickness, which is especially important at the joints. It is better to mount such pipes at a positive temperature due to fragility, which increases in frost.
