What are the disadvantages of a polycarbonate roof

The use of cellular polycarbonate is oriented primarily to the construction of small structures and architectural forms with maximum light transmission. These include greenhouses, gazebos, awnings, outbuildings.

Due to the exceptional flexibility of polycarbonate sheets, any modification can be constructed. To such an indispensable advantage, the bending strength of the material can be added. Polycarbonate is also extremely leakproof.

If you look at the sheets of polycarbonate, you can see that it consists of two continuous paintings and honeycombs between them. In these cells there is nothing but air, which, as you know, is an excellent heat insulator. Therefore, greenhouses are built from polycarbonate, which, with a competent heating device, can serve as greenhouses all year round.

Polycarbonate Roof Disadvantages

Each building material has its drawbacks. Polycarbonate is no exception. They, especially, need to be taken into account when choosing polycarbonate as the main material for canopies and roofs of greenhouses:

  • Low level of resistance to mechanical damage. Kick, thrown stone, strong hail - all this can cause damage to the polycarbonate. Moreover, with improper roof design and untimely cleaning of snow, polycarbonate may simply not withstand the load;
  • Abrasive wear - this property means that under the influence of any shuffling objects, polycarbonate quickly becomes worthless;
  • Thermal expansion. Under the influence of temperatures, polycarbonate can slightly increase in size. This must be taken into account when designing and installing the structure - to leave gaps, do not tighten the fasteners tightly. If this is not done, then the structure may deform over time.
  • Lack of vapor permeability. The polycarbonate sheet is completely tight. And if you make of it not only the roof, but the whole building, then you need to consider the ventilation windows.
/

The cost of polycarbonate is its advantage, not its disadvantage. If you compare the price tags of glass or roof tiles, you can be pleasantly surprised that not only the cost polycarbonate itself, but also services for its installation will cost one and a half times cheaper than construction from other materials.
