The countertop is an important part of the kitchen. The material directly determines the durability of the entire structure. Worktops are constantly in use, so it is important to choose high-quality.
Types of countertops
Kitchen worktops are made from a large number of materials, including: natural and artificial stone, plastic, particleboard, MDF, natural wood, stainless steel, tempered glass, ceramic tile.
Increased requirements are imposed on the countertop from any material:
- Moisture resistance and water tightness;
- Resistance to aggressive chemistry: acids, dyes, oils, cleaners;
- Resistance to shock and other mechanical damage;
- Resistance to high and low temperatures;
- Easy to clean (any stains should be easily removed from the surface);
- Resistance to fading;
- Harmonious appearance.
If several of these items do not reach, then most likely it is better to refuse such a countertop.
MDF worktops
At the heart of such countertops is MDF board, which is covered with a dense plastic layer. But with careless handling, such disadvantages are distinguished as: fading in places where spots are most often rubbed; poor resistance to high temperatures when dropped heavy objects or impacts, small dents or chips remain on the surface, if the joints are constantly exposed to moisture, then over time the material swells up.
Chipboard
Worktops from chipboard are one of the cheapest, so you need to go as strictly as possible to their choice. They have a large number of disadvantages: over time, constant stains from coffee or other coloring substances appear on the surface, the countertop swells when in contact with water, when using abrasive products, the paint is quickly wiped off, on average 5 years, the surface is not resistant to thermal impacts.
Acrylic
Acrylic countertops are a type of artificial stone. Such surfaces quickly lose their appearance if they are cut products without a board (scratches or chips remain), if they are cleaned with harsh chemicals or accidentally spilled some kind of drink. Acrylic is quickly dirty and poorly rubbed, it can melt when exposed to high temperatures.
Natural wood
At its high price, tabletops made of solid wood have one of the lowest indicators of wear resistance. The tree reacts painfully to hot pans, pots, mugs or teapots. In addition, if the impregnation and varnishing were mediocre, then soon the owner of the countertop will begin to “please” all kinds of defects: chips, scratches, swollen surfaces. When cleaning with the wrong product, the tree can easily be damaged, and with constant humidity, fungi or mold can start in it.
