The sphere of construction and design of premises is always moving in the direction of development and improvement. One of the last decorative finishing materials has become fiberglass wallpaper. This material came to us from Europe and created many myths around itself. However, no one refused to use it, although some concerns exist. In order to understand whether this material is so harmful, as they say about it, you just need to consider it in more detail.

What it is?

Fiberglass finishing material (cullet) is a finishing coating in rolls, which is made weaving and has special glass as the basis. Its peculiarity is that it consists of limestone, quartz sand, dolomite, soda and clay. This material is heated to 1200 degrees, after stretching the fibers and forming yarn from them. All fibers differ in thickness and structure, since a subsequent pattern will be folded from them when the finished fabric is knitted. After the final plexus of glass fibers, the entire fabric is impregnated with a solution with the participation of starch, stabilizing its shape.

The natural composition of the materials provides the finished coating with maximum safety and no danger to allergy sufferers.

The advantages of glass

  1. Environmentally friendly and natural.
  2. Breathability.
  3. Fire safety (cullet is not subject to fire, and in case of heating do not emit hazardous substances).
  4. Possibility of coloring.
  5. Strength (they are two times higher than the tensile strength of vinyl wallpaper).
  6. Moisture resistance (easy to wash, which is why they are considered ideal for a bathroom and kitchen).
  7. Resistance to emergence and reproduction of fungus and mold.
  8. Long service life (provided due to the complex properties of the material as a whole).

disadvantages

The disadvantages of this material are minimal. These are: a high price and a special care requirement when processing them. The high cost is quite understandable using more expensive raw materials and a very long service life (up to 30 years), so it pays off in full. But caution when working with this material is just a safety precaution.

Since glass fibers are fragile and thin, small particles can crumble when cutting parts from the finished fabric. Unlike glass wool, in the cullet, such particles are not so thin that they can penetrate lungs or respiratory organs, but prick, get hurt, or get irritated in contact with them really. Therefore, during the decoration of the premises it is necessary to wear long-sleeved clothing and use a mask and a respirator. After finishing work, it is imperative to do wet cleaning.

After pasting the room and painting the glass, you can not be afraid that small particles will fall on exposed skin, as glue plays a bonding role, and paint - an additional protective function.

Kinds

There are two types of cullet:

  • fiberglass;
  • cullet.

The first refers more to auxiliary materials, because it is used as a leveling coating before plastering, and has a smoother surface. And the second is considered the finishing material, because it has a large thickness, texture and dense structure.
