The Moorish lawn is one of the interesting gardening ideas that can add variety to the landscape. Recently, most owners of suburban areas draw up free zones with a green lawn. This, of course, gives the garden and grooming, and accuracy, and the unity of the entire garden. But the Moorish lawn is able to bring brightness and naturalness to the image of the garden.
Plants for moorish lawn
The correct selection of plants is the key to a beautiful and long-blooming meadow on your site. The Moorish lawn should include cereals, approximately 80%, and flowering plants, about 20%, which are characteristic of wild fields and meadows. Cereals in the lawn may be more, it is at your discretion. In addition, ready-made mixes for the Moorish lawn can be purchased at garden stores. Of flowering plants, the following can be recommended:
- Eastern poppy. Bright spots of this flower will ideally look among cereal crops. Flowering from mid to late May.
- Meadow chamomile. Flowering is quite long, goes well with both decorative cereals and other flowering plants, such as bells or cornflowers.
- Field cornflower. The rich blue heads of these plants go well with cereal crops, as well as with flowers of red, white, and yellow hue. Therefore, cornflowers interspersed with poppies or daisies will look very organic and natural.
- Large-flowered flax. A very beautiful plant with sky blue flowers. However, they can be both red and white-red.
- Swimsuit. Bright yellow flowers look great on the lawn, especially in sunlight.
Almost all flowering plants in the Moorish lawn are good honey plants, therefore, you need to be prepared for the fact that bees may appear on your site. But you should not be afraid of this, because bees, as a rule, do not attack people, unlike wasps.
Soil preparation under the Moorish lawn
The first stage of soil preparation is digging it up and removing all weeds. This should be taken very responsibly, because, otherwise, the ubiquitous weeds can simply crush your lawn, and all efforts will be in vain. It is better to dig the soil in the autumn to a depth of about 20 cm. If the site is swampy, it is necessary to equip the drainage system. After this, fertilizers are applied - rotted manure, humus, and in the spring you can also make mineral fertilizers.
Prepared soil must be compacted and left for some time in this condition. When the remaining weeds germinate, they should also be removed.
How to sow a Moorish lawn
Sowing is recommended for winter or early May. It is advisable to do this in calm weather, so that the seeds are distributed evenly on the soil. Otherwise, you may get islands with cereals at one end of the lawn, and islands with flowers at the other.
Seeds are sown in moist soil and planted to a depth of 5 cm. In this case, it is better to level the soil with a rake, and then slightly compact. So that the seeds do not glue the birds, and the shoots are more friendly, the territory of the Moorish lawn can be covered with white non-woven material.
Moorish lawn care
Despite the unpretentiousness of the Moorish lawn, he also needs some care. It must be watered, the emerging weeds should be removed, and also mowed on time. The first haircut is carried out when cereals have sprouted, and flowering plants have not yet appeared. This will prevent the cereals from drowning out the flowers. Approximately, in September-October, when the ripening of plant seeds occurs, re-mowing is carried out. The height of the mowed lawn should be from 8 to 12 cm.
That's all the care of the Moorish lawn. It’s easy, and the result is a beautiful flowering lawn.
