How to quickly make a self-locking nut

A self-locking nut is an advanced nut that is used to fasten units that are exposed to vibration or shock. After a few dozen strokes, the usual mechanism will spin up, so that this does not happen, you can make a self-locking nut yourself.

/

How it works

Ready-made self-locking nuts must meet the following conditions: reliable locking, the thread must twist easily to the last coupler, the material between the nut and the bolt must not violate the tightness of the connection, the thread must be twisted and untwisted repeatedly.

The principle of operation of a self-locking nut is based on frictional locking, which provides high friction in the threads. Better nuts create similar parameters at the end of the tightening, so the material of its manufacture must meet the greatest elasticity. Self-locking nuts, ideally, require heat treatment.

/

Manufacture

To make a self-locking nut, take a bolt and a nut for it, which must be locked, a heat-shrink tube of a suitable diameter, a lighter, a wrench.

A tube with a small loose end is put on the bolt. Now the structure is heated by a lighter for a tight connection, the free tail should not be exposed to flame.

/

Using a wrench, a nut is screwed onto the bolt, its travel is tight. The thread end of the tube will be cut by itself. The essence of the technology is simple: when a nut moves through a heat-shrink tube, its material is embedded in the thread and an analog of a nut with a pressed nylon ring is obtained.

/

Such a connection will be securely fastened and will not disperse under vibration exposure. If it is necessary to remove the nut, then the key is used for this. The method is suitable for bolts with a diameter of at least M8. Smaller heat-shrink tubing does not meet tight joint conditions.

other methods

There are other methods and technologies for preventing thread unwinding, more standard:

  • The use of a lock nut, which is taken as either a regular nut or a clamping nut;
  • Installation of a spring washer;
  • Thread connection with special glue;
  • Use of a nut with a locking ring made of nylon or polyamide.
