Beginner Tips

There are four directions of woodcarving:

One of the oldest ways is to create a wooden sculpture by truncating. Finishing is important here, for which a grinder and carved knife are used. Such carvings can be used both for the manufacture of souvenirs, and for creating carved railings, massive frames for mirrors, and furniture:

  • The relief pattern on wood is done on a flat wooden panel. The figures have different depths of cutting, due to which an illusion of volumetric picture is created. This method is suitable for the manufacture of landscapes, thematic paintings and even portraits.
  • Using slotted threads, you can create real masterpieces that resemble lace. They use openwork in the interior for decorating furniture or as independent wall decorations. This is the perfect way for beginners who don't need a lot of tools.
  • In the overlaid thread, a combination of a common wooden base and separately made openwork elements is used. This method is especially popular in interior design to give ethnic flavor to the setting.

For woodcarving, you can use almost all hardwoods growing in temperate climates. It is better to use soft wood with medium fiber. To begin with, poplar, willow, maple or linden are suitable, but conifers require preliminary preparation. Pay attention to the structure of the slice - it should not have knots and tar clusters.
