Reliable DIY glue for slate

Slate is a rather fragile material for the roof and after a couple of years of operation cracks or holes appear on it. To maintain its original appearance longer, it is necessary to sweep away debris and thick layers during the rainy and snowy season snowdrifts, because from increased humidity and decay of twigs and leaves, the material begins to become sour, overgrown with moss or to crack.

But even with careful handling and care, damage to the coating will appear. If there is no money to replace the slate, then you can seal it with a special strong solution prepared at home. For the recipe you will need gasoline, polystyrene foam, fiberglass, a brush, scissors, a solvent, a rag, a stiff brush.

Cooking

The glue is prepared away from fire and heat, it is advisable to wear a respirator so as not to be poisoned by gasoline vapors. The container for mixing glue should have a wide neck. In a measuring cup, 250 ml of gasoline is poured (it is better to take with the highest octane rating) and poured into a container.

If the gasoline is old, then for reliability add solvent, about 50 ml. Then the polystyrene is crushed and immersed in gasoline, a rapid dissolution process begins. Polyfoam is added until the liquid begins to thicken and turn gray. The consistency should look like wallpaper glue. The problem is that the finished mixture is normally held on the brush.

Slate Repair

After the glue has prepared. Fiberglass or nylon mesh, solvent, brush, scissors, rag and brush are taken. Everything is put together in a suitable container so that it is convenient to lift it onto the roof.

The slate around the damaged area is swept with a stiff brush, cleaned of dirt and dust. After the area around is treated with a cloth moistened with solvent. Glue is applied to the finished edges with a brush, and a nylon mesh or fiberglass is applied to it. The patch is treated with glue.

Three hours later, a patch is again glued to the same place and coated with copious glue on top. In a day, gasoline vapors will disappear, leaving a strong connection of foam and mesh. Roof repairs are carried out in dry weather, as the composition may not grasp well enough due to dampness. In this state, the roof will be reliable for a couple of years.
