Sometimes, starting a major overhaul in an old apartment, the owners encounter load-bearing beams in the wall or ceiling. They are elements of strong concrete with reinforcement inside. On the crossbars, floors between floors are supported, therefore it is strictly forbidden to remove the beams.
Firstly, this is simply stupid, because because of the destruction of the beam there is a risk of being left without an apartment at all. After the demolition of the bearing crossbar, the walls will crack, the neighbors can report to the housing inspection. For this faces a large fine.
Secondly, the beams are made very reliable, so it will be difficult to cut them yourself. And it is unlikely that normal masters will take up such a thing.
How to fit a beam into the interior
But what if the beam nevertheless interferes and spoils the view? Designers offer various solutions to this issue, helping to organically fit the load-bearing beams into the interior.
- Do not change anything - modern styles, such as a loft, for example, allow you to leave the beam as an element of the structure and, conversely, emphasize it;
- To balance - a beam painted or plastered in the color of the ceiling can successfully “get lost” against its background. But it is also worthwhile to organically balance the protrusion with similar elements. For example, ceiling beams are well complemented by light curtains, furniture facades or a pattern on the floor;
- Set as the boundary of the separation of zones. Using a beam, you can divide the space into zones. For example, up to the beam there can be a ceiling of one color made of PVC, and after it another of plasterboard;
- Add a function - if you attach LED or other lamps to the beam, it will look very different;
- Make it “invisible” in space. This effect can be achieved using one or more mirrors. Reflections of the walls and ceiling will make the beam “invisible”;
- Add partitions - under the beam, you can perfectly install decorative, sliding and other partitions;
- Decorate with stucco molding - if the upper part of the wall is decorated with stucco molding, few will guess that the supporting beam is hidden under the decorative elements;
- Focus on the beam. You can not close the beam, but, on the contrary, focus on it. This can be done using a well-chosen color or material.
- Distract attention - having designed the space next to the beam with a brighter decor, you can make it almost invisible against this background.
So the presence of a supporting beam in the apartment is not a problem for a good designer. He can always find several suitable solutions for the design of such a room. If you show imagination, then it’s easy to add your options to these points.
