Liquid wallpaper, photos of which you have probably already met, are a relatively new material for decorating walls. For those who first wonder: what does a liquid wallpaper look like? - we answer... Imagine a warm smooth or velvety surface, which no one can pass by without stroking and asking what kind of miracle it is. This is the most pleasant wallpaper of all existing with a host of other advantages.
What are liquid wallpapers?
All ingenious is simple and the composition of liquid wallpaper is an additional confirmation of this. The dry mixture is a filler, glue and additives. On average, this material is a symbiosis of ordinary wallpaper and decorative plaster (only without sand, as in the latter case). Their second name is silk plaster.
Different manufacturers add all kinds of dyes, harmless fungicides (interfering with the formation of mold and fungus) and decor. As decorations, most often used:
- glitters (sparkles),
- pieces of mica
- mother of pearl
- mineral chips.
If you are a fan of shiny surfaces, decor can always be bought separately.
The most common fillers are cellulose or silk. Silk cannot be confused with others due to its wonderful appearance. Ordinary gypsum is added to some mixtures to increase ductility.
Advantages and disadvantages of liquid wallpaper
Liquid wallpaper has pros and cons. It is advisable to study the reviews about this material prior to purchase in order to avoid disappointment in the future.
disadvantages
- Material is afraid of water. Liquid wallpaper in the kitchen reviews are quite negative. Same as in the bathroom. Water in the form of steam or drops, falling on them, is instantly absorbed inward. The material swells and any touch immediately deforms the surface.
In some cases, they can be varnished on top. But there will be no guarantee. Their porous structure will take an incredible amount of varnish. And the whole soft structure, and silk shade, will hide under a layer of film. If you strongly desire to use such a coating in the kitchen, it is recommended on the side located away from the working area.
- Cost. High-quality liquid wallpapers are superior in price to the same vinyl or paper.
- The flow rate indicated on the package is suitable for distribution on a perfectly flat surface. If, for example, you have a joining seam on the ceiling, then you will have to use more material to equalize the differences.
- Preparation time for work is from 8 hours. Modern types of glue allow you to start applying much faster.
Advantages
- One of the main positive qualities is environmental friendliness and hypoallergenicity. The composition of the material is completely harmless, so this material is now popular in children's rooms in Moscow and throughout Russia.
- They also do not accumulate static electricity.
- Quite well hide surface imperfections (up to 3 mm). Therefore, preparing the coating before application is easy.
- The material is seamless and involves a continuous web. And even in the most inaccessible places there will be no flaws.
- They can be applied by one person both on the walls and on the ceiling. Even if you have never tried yourself in this area before, there will be no problems. The main thing is a comfortable trowel, a firm hand and the material will lie perfectly and evenly.
- They are easy to partially repair - soak the required area with water from the spray gun, remove it with a spatula and apply new ones.
- They are always warm to the touch and suitable for unheated rooms.
- They have soundproofing properties.
- Preparation for applying liquid wallpaper is much more convenient than conventional. No need to measure rolls and apply glue over the entire surface. Enough trowels and buckets.
Features of wall decoration with liquid wallpaper
- Chalk and liquid wallpaper are incompatible things. They can not be applied to chalk and lime. This is especially true of white. Even if you primed the wall with a waterproofing mixture, there is no guarantee that the walls or ceiling will not be in yellow stains.
Therefore, no matter how tempting the prospect of applying them to the ceiling with the previous whitewash is, think about whether you can completely remove the remains of the chalk. Or you should think about other building material.
- But drywall and concrete are best suited. An even and homogeneous wall with the same moisture-absorbing ability without bumps is an ideal surface for such a finishing material.
- In all other cases, you should cover the entire surface with a layer of gypsum putty. And then primed in several layers.
Liquid wallpaper in the interior
If you have made a firm decision, it's time to think about design. This will help you with liquid wallpaper photos of interiors in ordinary apartments. In general, the material easily fits into any style composition. According to the rules of design, the walls should be in harmony with furniture, interior and other decor.
Therefore, for example, the blood-red version of the nursery is not suitable for sure. But a cheerful house or flowers will look just the way.
- In the bedroom, even one wall of liquid wallpaper looks great. The warm and soft headboard near the bed simply offers relaxation.
- In the living room or in the hall with solid fragments, you can shade the furniture set.
- Liquid wallpaper is often used to decorate the ceiling. The main advantages:
- ease of application;
- non-burning material;
- the ability to hide flaws (seams and joints of panels).
Varieties of liquid materials for walls
- Silk wallpapers, the main filler of which is the material of the same name. This is the most beautiful variety of all. They do not fade in the sun, unlike cellulose. But their cost differs by an order of magnitude somewhere.
- Cellulose. This is a paper version known to all of us, only in crushed form. Their main advantage is cheapness. And they are also easy to make with your own hands.
- Silk and cellulose. The combination of the above fibers.
- Cotton Meet least often.
Design of an ordinary apartment
The main advantage of this finishing option is versatility. The best design solutions for the home:
- Contrast. Using masking tape or templates, you can create vivid drawings of diametrically opposite colors. It is very good to perform a mosaic or geometric patterns in this way. These compositions will never be left without attention and will be able to create an emphasis on the necessary subject.
- Ornament. Black and white, stylized (ethnic style, antique, floral) with the help of patterns is applied quite quickly.
- Picture. You can decorate the nursery with your favorite characters by the type of coloring and please a little family member.
Design Tips
By purchasing liquid wallpaper, you will fully embody your design decisions. This is truly a unique material that can be easily corrected.
Making a picture of them is a little more complicated than just sticking it. But with the help of a stencil, it is quite possible to realize the plan. Of course, they are far from wallpaper, but this material is remarkable for its other properties.
Take a thick material (hard paper, cardboard or thick film) and draw a drawing by hand. Now on the Internet there are a lot of all kinds of templates and you can print them in the absence of artistic talents. If the picture is very large, divide the layout into fragments and transfer in parts.
Another variant:
- draw a pattern on the wall with a pencil,
- distribute wallpaper
- remove excess with a spatula,
- apply the second side by sticking on a completed masking tape.
- It would be nice to lay the material completely in one day. Otherwise, you will need to first soak the edges, and then, after alignment, continue to work. Then your surface will be perfectly flat.
- If the liquid wallpaper of a homogeneous structure is made thicker, then you can try to create a stucco molding or a bas-relief from them.
- Pay attention to a small nuance when applying liquid wallpaper in the corridor. Most often there is no natural light. But when you first meet them in the store, you will see them more vivid. After laying, you may be somewhat disappointed, because with artificial light, the surfaces look different.
Combination of materials
Liquid wallpaper blends well with other materials:
- Combination of different textures. If for the picture you take the booked material and plain cellulose wallpaper (of the same or contrasting shade), you will get a bright and original plane.
- You can design only one wall, and the rest of the surface made of other materials. It’s so good to divide the room into zones.
- Try to combine shades of the same color on one surface. So you can expand the space. Flowers and abstractions look good in this way.
