TV screen types: TV screen type

Televisions are classified by certain parameters, such as color rendering (black and white or color), power supply (universal or mains) alternating current), the active elements used (semiconductor devices or integrated circuits) and the diagonal size (stationary or portable).

In turn, TV screens are divided into the following types: PLASMA, LED, OLED, LCD, QLED, IPS and others. Each of them has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, which will be discussed later.

Plasma screens

Plasma screensThe device technology of this screen is quite simple and interesting: the plasma panel consists of many pixels that are filled with special gas. On both sides, the pixels are bounded by two plates. When an electric current is supplied, this gas, most often neon, is converted into plasma, as a result of which it emits ultraviolet light. Reflecting on glass, ultraviolet radiation is not visible to the human eye. Using a scanning electrode, visible light passes into the image reflected on the display. Visible light is converted through a scanning electrode into an image. The resulting image is clear and bright - this is one of the main advantages of this type of display. Plasma matrices also provide high contrast and serve more than 35 years.

However, they are unnecessarily energy-intensive and heat up during long viewing.

LED screens

LED screensTranslating word for word, LED is a light emitting diode, but it is worth noting that LEDs act as sources of luminescence, and are not a real unit of the resulting image. Currently, a number of such screens are produced, which differ in the LEDs used and the color of the lamps. For example, there are one-color, multi-colored and mixed lamps, the quality of the color palette in them increases accordingly. Thus, the main characteristics of LED screens should be highlighted resolution (Full HD, HD Ready, Ultra HD), unique SMART function, sweep frequency (image updates occurring over a certain period time). The main advantages are considered to be the clarity of the displayed signals, color saturation, high energy intensity.

OLED screens

OLED screensOLED is an array of organic LEDs. The organic part is considered to be a carbon film in front of the glass in the interior of the panel. When an electric current passes through OLED arrays, they emit their own light, which is converted into a clear, high-quality image. These screens have many advantages, for example, the panel thickness is less than 3 mm, and displays of this type are able to withstand significant temperature changes - from -40 to +70 ° C. However, the main drawback that buyers of TVs with this type of screen have to face: high cost.

QLED screens

QLED screensThis type of matrix differs from all of the above production technologies, namely due to quantum dots. Their size corresponds to a specific color. QLED screens are designed so that when constructing an image, the color structure is distorted minimally, this allows for clear and rich color reproduction. Unlike the OLED matrix, QLED are significantly less, therefore, are in great demand in the market. Among the key advantages: the brightness of the picture, achieved due to the fact that quantum dots are able to reflect about a billion color shades without compromising brightness. However, these televisions do not differ in low thickness and high level of contrast in comparison with OLED screens.

LCD screens

LCD screensLiquid crystal displays consist of a protective coating, a liquid crystal lattice, light filters and a light source. LCD screens operate by transmitting electrical pulses through a special liquid crystal medium, which is located between two electronic plates. By the way, the crystals that make up the LCD do not emit light and color. The crystalline liquid is highlighted so that the image becomes visible, and the light, after passing through the LCD layer, must be incident on special color filters. In fact, LED type matrices are also considered liquid crystal, however, as mentioned earlier, with LED backlight. The main disadvantages: limited viewing angle and low contrast; and advantages: low price, low weight and low power consumption.

IPS screens

IPS screensIPS technology is to some extent unique because it allows you to view images at angles above 150 degrees. The principle of operation is based on the rotation of the crystals by 90 degrees, during the supply of electric current. It is worth noting that the crystals are embedded parallel to the plane and, in the absence of voltage, have exclusively black color. TVs with these screens have a high cost, but are quite consistent with it. Also, of the shortcomings, a pronounced grid between the pixels is noted.

Which type of screen is better

Thus, having studied all the advantages, disadvantages, technical characteristics, we can conclude that the best type of screens is OLED, despite the cost, these screens have the largest benefits. In second place you can put QLED, and then other models.
