What are the types of skirting boards for stretch ceilings

Modern manufacturers produce a wide variety of skirting boards. But wooden or gypsum ceilings are completely unsuitable for a stretch ceiling, since they are inconvenient and are very heavy.

Foam plastic

There are models in 1.3 and 1.5 meters and two meters. They are very light, it is not difficult to handle them, if you wish, you can cut them with an ordinary knife. The design of the plinth can be different: with patterns that imitate stucco molding, etc.

Shades do not differ in variety. Skirting boards are produced only in white, but since they can always be covered with paint, this drawback disappears. If the installation has already been made, masking tape is glued to the adjacent surfaces. This will prevent paint from spilling onto the ceiling.

Any product has its drawbacks. Styrofoam skirting boards are no exception. They require extra care when used due to their fragility and fragility. Better to play it safe and buy more curbs than necessary.

Polyfoam does not bend, which imposes restrictions on its use. Only on ideal walls can it be glued. Otherwise, the curbs will not be able to lie tightly on the surface, so they will not stick securely on it. If the apartment has rounded corners, then such options will also not work. Styrofoam curbs are fixed to the walls in the following ways:

  • liquid nails;
  • finishing putty;
  • water-based glue (no solvent).

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is somewhat heavier than foam. This leads to the need to use special adhesives. Many manufacturers of borders from this material recommend their own formulations - this is what makes ORAC Decor stand out. Cutting such a plinth with a simple knife will not work - you need a miter saw.

reference. In order to attach borders of sufficiently large sizes, self-tapping screws are used in addition to glue. To disguise their hats, putty is used, as well as paints.

Unlike foam, polyurethane skirting boards are even flexible, which allows them to be used in rooms with rounded shapes.

Polyurethane is not afraid of moisture, it is easy to clean. You can apply paint on it, and more than once. In this case, the texture of the material is preserved. Nothing prevents you from matching the tone of the false ceiling and the baseboard. Considering that there are a lot of options, there is a place for fantasy to roam. The only drawback is that polyurethane is the most expensive of all skirting materials.

Plastic

PVC-based models are not afraid of moisture. This makes it possible to install them in kitchens, as well as in bathrooms and other rooms with high humidity. Naturally, the curbs are easy to clean.

The length of this type of skirting board is two and a half meters. The color is exceptionally white. They have no patterns. But they do not need to be glued. It is enough just to insert it into the groove, which is in the stretch ceiling profile. It's easier to mount and everything happens quickly. This is a clear advantage. No finishing is required after installation.

Such a material is strong and lightweight, but it will not work to bend it. This requires careful pre-leveling of the walls. You need a hacksaw to cut.

Which ceiling plinth to choose

All options, with the exception of those made of plastic, are wall-mounted. For stretch ceilings, the best choice is light skirting boards with a wide vertical strip. This will make the connection more durable. When choosing a size, you should start from the height of the ceiling. A small room with large skirting boards will seem much smaller than it really is. In order for everything to look harmonious visually, you must adhere to the following rule:

  • with a ceiling height of no more than two and a half meters, you need to use skirting boards that do not exceed four centimeters in width;
  • if the room is from two and a half to three meters high, the border should be from five to ten centimeters;
  • for rooms with a ceiling of more than three meters - the model can be wide, starting from ten centimeters.

When choosing a material, you need to focus on the room itself:

  1. If there are rounded edges in the room or the walls are not ideal, then you will have to stop the choice on polyurethane skirting boards.
  2. For rooms where the humidity is high enough, plastic curbs are ideal.
  3. If you plan to install a backlight, then it is better to take wide moldings.
  4. The most common option is foam moldings.

The design should be chosen based on the overall interior of the room. In a room with wallpaper on the walls that have a large pattern, it is better to take baseboards without patterns at all or with a discreet ornament. If the walls are decorated simply, then the borders, on the contrary, should be taken quite noticeable, focusing on themselves.

Is it possible to leave a stretch ceiling without a plinth

There is only one positive moment in the absence of curbs - this is the financial component. You can save some money.

There is much more negative. Outwardly, such ceilings are sloppy. The junction of the wall and ceiling is clearly visible. If the wallpaper is made of vinyl or non-woven, then this drawback is more pronounced.
