Plywood ceiling decoration: installation features and tools

Once we faced a problem - how to sew the ceiling with something practical and inexpensive. The most readily available materials were plasterboard or plywood boards. GKL is convenient and inexpensive, but poor moisture resistance, deforms, sags and ripples. Therefore, we firmly decided that the ceiling would be covered with plywood. If all the preparatory work is done responsibly and correctly, it will delight the eye for a long time with the warmth of natural wood and durability.

The finishing method is undeservedly forgotten. But this natural and high quality coating. It looks aesthetically pleasing and complements any modern interior.

Advantages of the method

Plywood is very easy to prepare for installation, cut to size and assemble without any assistance.

• Protection against mold and rot, due to the treatment of the inner surface with antibacterial and antifungal compounds.
• Prepared joints for further sealing with wood putty to match the background will make them invisible.
• Covering the front side with water-based varnish ensures the fire safety of the room.

All this in the complex distinguishes plywood very favorably from slats or boards.

Material disadvantages

If you install guide profiles with a small pitch not exceeding 30 centimeters, and use for sewing on plywood of insufficient thickness, less than 6 mm, soon the smooth surface is no longer will be. Inevitably sagging. The ceiling will go in "waves". Therefore, even at the stage of preparation, it was decided to use metal profiles for mounting drywall as a crate. They are not expensive, but installed in a single plane will reliably hold the entire structure in the required perfectly flat form.

Step by step guide

Today I will tell you about the features of decorating the ceiling with plywood with my own hands. My family and I went through this stage of repair. I can say that it's easy to do the work inside and out with your own hands and simple enough.

Tools

So, starting work, you should make sure that you have the necessary equipment:

1. Laser level or spirit level.
2. Rotary hammer or hammer drill.
3. Screwdriver.
4. Stepladder or scaffold.
5. Cutting pliers.
6. A hammer.
7. Sandpaper.
8. Paint roller with extension handle.
9. Putty knife.
10. Scissors for metal or a cutting machine (small grinder).

Armed with everything you need, we proceed to the repair.

On the crate

To fasten the guides, you first need to set the level. There are no professional laser devices at home. So I had to use the spirit level the old way. It is a long and flexible tube with special containers at the ends to define the horizon line. There is one more name - the water level. Here it was not without an assistant, but everything was quickly and accurately indicated on the walls, just below the ceiling, taking into account the thickness of the profile and with a margin for adjusting the mounting strips.

Further, slowly and with an arrangement, the drill drilled at the required distance from each other holes in the profile intended for installation on the wall. And then in these places already puncher prepared holes for dowel-nails and fixed the desired profile along the perimeter of the wall with an ordinary hammer. Everything is strictly along the lines marked earlier with a spirit level.

After that, the main profile of the required length was prepared along the short side of the room and installed according to the previously fixed wall blanks. Fastened them between each other with special pliers. When pressed in the right place on the handles, with their teeth they cut through the metal and unbend it to the sides. Thus ensuring a secure fixation of the two parts. There is another way of attaching these parts - with special self-tapping screws, called "bugs" because of their size.

It is imperative to install a transverse profile between the main guides (from wall to wall). Especially this important at the joints of the sheetsto avoid gaps. All edges of the sheet must be securely fixed with self-tapping screws to the crate.

After that, using a perforator (at a distance of half a meter from each other), I fixed special height-adjusting strips, or "crocodiles", as experts call them, with dowel-nails. They provide reliable fastening of sheets to a rough ceiling.

For adhesive composition

Fastening of sheets with special glue is allowed. But such an installation of sheets was abandoned at the stage of preparation for work and the purchase of material. Self-tapping screws are much more reliable.

On beams

If our ceiling in the house was equipped with wooden beams, it would be enough to use self-tapping screws with a length of 50 mm - for strength and reliability. After fixing the crate or preparing the base, proceed to the installation of plywood sheets.

For this, all edges, future joints are processed with a rasp. A rough surface remains, providing adhesion of wood and putty.

Do not forget about the obligatory processing of plywood with antiseptics. They will not change the color of the wood, but they will protect it from the formation of mold and mildew.

Plywood with a thickness of 6–8 mm is not too heavy and it is quite possible for an adult man to independently hold it in the right place, and grab the edges with a pair of self-tapping screws for metal.

Expert advice and finishing

At the end of the installation, the joints were covered with a filler of a suitable color. We waited until the composition hardens, and processed it with medium-sized sandpaper. Then the finished ceiling was covered with a water-based varnish. It took three dense layers.

He acquired a pleasant matte sheen and set off the interior of the room after the furnishings. So much time has passed, and my family and I are not overjoyed. The finish turned out to be pleasant and aesthetic, ideally suited to the chosen design.
