This most curved pipe acts as a hydraulic seal, preventing the movement of sewer gases and vapors through the drain pipe back into the room. Therefore, this device must be installed under all sinks and sinks.

Principle of operation:

How the siphon works

Modern siphons work on the principle of a hydraulic seal, that is, some the amount of water that serves as a sealed membrane that does not allow foul-smelling gases that rise through the pipes from sewerage.

As you use plumbing, this water is constantly renewed and therefore cannot be a source of gases by itself. It acts as a water valve for the inlet of dirty water and does not release its vapors.

In a straight pipe, water can accumulate only as a result of a blockage, therefore all siphons have a curved shape, it is in the bend that it remains water, since when you close the tap and stop the flow of new water, the liquid in the bend cannot overcome it without sufficient pressure.

Today, various types of units are manufactured, depending on the materials and design used.

According to the materials used for the manufacture, they are divided into two main groups:

PVC

Plastic sink siphon

Simply put, plastic based on polyethylene or polypropylene. They are the most common option for kitchen sinks, as they are resistant to decay and corrosion.

Another plus is the smooth structure of the material, which prevents grease and dirt from sticking to the inner walls. such a device, otherwise, because of them, the inner diameter of the pipe could decrease and, as a result, over time, blockage.

Metal sink siphon

They are made from non-ferrous metals: copper, brass, bronze and even chrome-plated steel.

They are no less diverse in their design features:

Flask-shaped, bottle-shaped

Siphon bottle for sink

Devices with a collapsible design, which includes not only a pipe, but also a so-called beaker-flask for collecting heavy deposits. Siphons of this type are available in immersed pipe models and with a pair of baffles.

Knee

Knee siphon

In the form of a pipe with a pair of S or U-shaped bends.

Corrugated

Corrugated sink siphon

The same as the previous ones, but with a corrugated pipeallowing you to freely adjust the bend. Unlike the previous options downward, sockets for connecting household appliances and overflow elements are not provided.

Flat

Flat sink siphon

One of the most compact options for implementing a siphon in the form of a pipe with a U-shaped elbow. There are such devices on sale even for steam kitchen sinks.

Criterias of choice

  1. Siphon in the kitchen under the sinkEasy to clean, because it is important to be able to quickly clean it without dismantling the entire structure. Such an opportunity is provided by bottle-type devices, since solids and fat washed off by water remain on the so-called glass and do not end up in huge quantities in the sewer pipes, clogging their. Thanks to the twist-off bottom of the glass, the cleaning procedure is as simple as possible.
  2. Versatility. Pipe-type siphons are more difficult to clean, therefore they are installed mainly in bathrooms, where both the load and the amount of dirt are much less. However, models with a convenient overflow, specially designed for sinks, are equipped with an additional hole for a drain, which gives them a significant advantage in kitchens with several appliances at once that require a drain: dishwasher and washing machine, pair sinks.
  3. Compactness. Installing a flat or corrugated drain is sometimes the only option when there is practically no free space under the sink. However, if such equipment is improperly installed, when the functional bend will not be of sufficient length, there is a high risk of sewage odors breaking through into the room.
  4. Power. This criterion is understood as the size of the branch pipe, its diameter. This is one of the most critical parameters for installation in the kitchen, where the load on the plumbing equipment is especially high. A siphon with a large-diameter branch pipe can pass a larger amount of dirty particles through itself before it gets clogged, which means it will need to be cleaned or changed an order of magnitude less often.
  5. Assembly. When buying a flask siphon, the glass must be assembled before connecting to the sink and drain pipe. For this, as a rule, a complete instruction is attached to each specific model, and an installation diagram, which contains the procedure for assembling a siphon for a sink. Pre-assembly is also required when used with a corrugated tube outlet. You need to connect them together in advance, before installing the entire system with a water outlet.

Some models of flask-shaped devices have an already integrated branch pipe, which greatly facilitates their installation.

Even easier to install is a corrugated siphon equipped at the ends with a pair of rigid pipes. After connecting one of them with the sink drain, and the other with a sewer pipe, the shape of the siphon is freely adjustable and fixed with clamps.

With strict adherence to the instructions, even a beginner will have no problems assembling this not very complicated, but important device.

DIY installation

Construction device

Almost all the materials and accessories necessary for installing a sink siphon in the kitchen are included in the delivery set of the device. This is the unit itself, and threaded nuts, screws and gaskets. By the way, it is better to tighten plastic nuts by hand, since when using a metal key, there is a risk of overdoing it and chipping off the plastic edges.

Installation will require a minimum of tools that are available in every home:

  1. Screwdriver for tightening metal screws.
  2. For sealing joints silicone sealant is used on the threads.
  3. Sharp knife for cutting off possible burrs on the thread, as well as trimming drain pipes.

When installing siphons, depending on the type, there are some differences, but in most cases the installation is carried out from top to bottom.

Before proceeding directly with the installation, you must carefully read the instructions, since even something as small as a gasket installed on the wrong side can lead to serious problems in the form leaks.

A man mounts a siphon on a sinkInstructions:

  1. At the first stage of installing the siphon, a grate is mounted in the drain hole, which will protect against too large particles of debris and foreign objects from entering it. As a rule, it comes with the device, but if it is not there, then you need to purchase it separately. The main rule for the installation of all plumbing fixtures is to install gaskets at the joints of parts. The grille is installed on a flat rubber gasket, in the same case, if the hole depth is not enough, it is planted on a layer of sealant.
  2. The second step is to connect the outlet to the sink drain., for this, a thick gasket is placed on its upper part, where a special side is provided. In the products of some manufacturers, it is already glued into place. After that, the branch pipe with the gasket installed on it is applied from below to the sink drain in such a way, so that the screw inserted from above into the hole in the grill can be screwed into the thread pressed into the body itself branch pipe. When tightening the screw, it is necessary, avoiding rotation of the flange with the gasket, to ensure a reliable connection.
  3. In cases where the kit does not include a mesh to protect the pipe, these are, as a rule, outdated drains, the branch pipe is attached under the sink with a plastic nut.
  4. After attaching the pipe to the sink, you can proceed to the installation of the siphon itself, which in general terms, as a rule, is a curved or corrugated tube, a flask. For this, a plastic nut or threaded screw and a cone-shaped rubber gasket are placed on the lower free end of the branch pipe. With proper installation, it is put on with the flared side to the nut.
  5. Further, into the socket in the siphon, the branch pipe is inserted to the optimum length. To prevent the gasket from deforming during installation, it is necessary to ensure that its narrow side enters the socket along the entire circumference.
  6. On the pipe for water drainage the same operations are performed with the nut and the cone gasket, after which it is connected to the drain hole in the siphon.
  7. Unoccupied drain pipe inserted directly into the sewer socket and fixed with a reliable rubber cuff, which will not allow foreign odors to enter the room.
  8. Elimination of leaks.

To avoid leaks, during the installation process, special attention should be paid to the tightness of all docking assemblies. Particular attention should be paid to the bottom plug, since the main pressure is exerted on it by the pressure of the water.

At the stage of purchasing the device, you should pay attention to any slightest defects in threaded connections, burrs, on them - this marriage, so it is better to choose another model if there is no desire to remove them manually or constantly substitute a bucket under the dripping sink.

During installation, it is imperative to use a sealant, and strictly observe the assembly procedure, otherwise the lack of even one gasket or its installation on the wrong side can lead to leakage.

After installation, it is necessary to check the reliability of the system. For this, a test run of water is made into the sink, with a safety container under it, in order to avoid the consequences of a possible leak. If leaks appear at the joints, it is necessary to additionally seal and tighten the nuts.

If this does not help, you may have made mistakes when installing the gaskets and you will have to rebuild the structure.

Price

Siphon under the sink in the kitchen

The price of a siphon for a sink in a kitchen is usually determined by a number of product parameters:

  1. Manufacturer, well-known brands are more expensive, but the number of defects in them is minimal.
  2. Product material, plastic or metal, its quantity, wall thickness and pipe diameter.
  3. Equipmentthe more varied it is, the more expensive the delivery set of such a device.

Examples of prices:

  1. Plastic, bottle type, with odor seal for the sink - Viega made in Germany costing 220 rubles.
  2. Brass, tubular, with odor trap for the sink - Grohe firms made in Germany at the price of 1620 rubles.
  3. Plastic, tubular, with a water seal for the sink - the company Geberit made in Switzerland worth 960 rubles.
  4. Bottle, chrome - French brand Jacob Delafon at the price of 3660 rubles.

Advice

  1. It is recommended to choose devices with a smooth wall pipe, they are much easier to clean.
  2. To avoid the penetration of unpleasant odors from the sewer into the room, during the dismantling of the old siphon and the installation of a new siphon, it is recommended to plug the sewer pipe with a rag or put a plastic bag on it.
  3. Before applying sealant to all docking points, it is advisable to clean and degrease them.
  4. In flask-type devices, the sealing of the threaded joint of the cup lid is excluded, since it will have to be regularly unscrewed during operation, therefore, in this case, it is recommended to use tow.
  5. In flask-type models, thanks to the adjustable immersion of the tube, it is possible to place the flask at different heights, but it should not allow it to touch the bottom of the flask or be secured in a too released state that does not provide a reliable fixation.
  6. Dimensions of the pipes of the purchased siphon, if possible, should correspond to the diameter of the socket of the sewer pipe.
  7. Buying a siphon, it is imperative to focus on the parameters and features of a particular sink.
